since he's the reason I'm here!

I've been animal mad all my 33 years and in that time have looked after animals of dozens of different species. I've kept most of the usual animals as pets at one time but had never had guinea pigs. I always thought they seemed very sweet and hoped to have them one day but then, one day, we were in pets at home and there was Roger. He was 4 months old and his sign said he needed to be kept alone. Well my pet hate is animals living on their own when they don't need to. I didn't know a great deal about piggies but I did know that they could be neutered and could then live with girls. So Roger came home with us rolleyes

Over the last couple of months we've been getting to know each other. He's quite shy but coming round. He now really enjoys head tickles and we melt every time he squeaks when he hears us coming up the stairs. He was neutered a few weeks ago and we can't wait for him to start his new life with some ladies in a couple of weeks.

At the moment he lives in a big bunny cage with a run attached but the cubes and correx has now arrived and, next weekend, we start building :<>

Anyway, here he is, my special little man. I'm curious to know what breed/type he is.

I shall, of course, add pics of his wives once they arrive.

Sorry no help with breed but defo a long haired :) I just wanted to say he is a dream :)) :)) sooooo cute

AWW - Roger is gorgeous! As far as I can see he is a sheltie (US: silkie).

You may like to keep boy and girls next door to each other for a few days - there are usually a lot less fireworks during introductions if both parties have had a chance to meet through the bars.

We have tips for introductions amongst other very informative threads in our reference section - even I prefer to read through it, so I can change tack if things don't go to plan.

Roger is gorgeous! We are also hoping to get a wife for our neutered male. Edward had his check at the vets today and all is well. So, hopefully in a few weeks we can try and find him some company.

So jealous about the cubes you are building, wish I had the room! x

He's gorgeous, and I agree he's a sheltie! His hair will get even longer and be even more gorgeous I'd say.

It's good he's getting friends. I can't believe they'd have a sign up saying he needs to live alone. Good thing you bought him and not somebody who would have kept him alone :)

Thanks everyone, he is a stunner isn't he? x)

See that's another thing to be annoyed with pets at home about. When we got him his coat was normal sort of length and there was nothing to advise that he would end up with a long coat. Now I don't mind at all, I've already got him some Posh N Go (:))) and I'm quite happy to put the work into keeping his coat nice but he could so easily have ended up all alone with a matted coat or thrown out cos he took up too much time :(

Do I need to do anything special with his coat or just comb him and bath him regularly?

He is absolutely stunning.

I think my heart just skipped a beat.

What a darling little man x)

He's lovely! When does he get his wives?

For my long haired guineas I use posh and go once a month. I use my fingers to groom their coat as they hate all kind of brushes but will tolerate my fingers. Then cut the hair around their bottoms to stop it from getting into wee. I do that maybe every 2 weeks or so.

I often wonder what long haired guineas would do in the wild?

Hopefully we're taking him to a rescue in Crawley on bank holiday weekend for him to choose his ladies. Then they come to do a homecheck and leave the girls with us if all is ok.

I guess they wouldn't exist in the wild. It's another example of us manipulating them for our pleasure, and the animals inevitably suffer for it :( If one was in the wild I guess they'd end up in a terrible state, poor things.

Rog hasn't had his first bath yet as his coat has only gotten long fairly recently. He got a big knot recently which we had to cut out (you can just see a little bald bit on his bum in one pic) so we're just waiting for that to settle down and then we'll perhaps give him a bath so he's all posh and smells nice for his date :))

Could anyone tell me if there's a "technical" name for his colouring? When describing him I tell people he's sort of like a tortoiseshell cat :))
