Well, we took Midge to the vet about her teeth

That is the one thing that always get me is they want to disappear with them, whereas with the horses they need you there to help keep control!

I have to say, I have an excellent EDT who doesn't require me to do anything except watch. He is into Natural Horsemanship, and they seem to know he is on their side, so he prefers to let them stand there by themselves (which they all do) and they just let him get on with it!

Was thinking more vets then the equine dentists....

Which is the very situation we face with our piggies, is it not? Luckily, EDT's are growing in number. Mine is due on 15th April. The cost for 4 routine floats is way less than we have already spent on Midge and her problems

update

Midge seems to have gone a little backwards

and although just holding her own weight-wise, is more snuffly and making more visible breathing efforts and sounds. These are definitely nasal/top of throat and have been present on and off for weeks and weeks. I'm thinking allergy as no discharge and it comes and goes. Baytril had no effect other than to depress her appetite and kick start the slow decline I think.

She has, according to Vedra, no teeth probs but is chewing as poorly as before she saw Vedra and was drooling (d r o o l i n g) yesterday. I have been going for it with syringe and other feeding and yesterday was a record day for intake but not weight gain.

I am variously giving
Meds : Nystatin, Daktarin, Ibuprofen, Dioralyte

Food : Critical Care and pureed veg with fresh grass and other grated treats. She went bonkers for some defrosted mini peas yesterday and ate them with no trouble at all.

I am also syringing her mouth out with clean water in between times and yesterday did the half a healthy pig poo in her food - made me cringe a bit but hey ho, that's a recognised appropriate thing to do!

Any ideas anyone?

And what is it with these stupid automatic smileys inserting themselves into words? Can you switch them off?

I have no suggestions but just wanted to say I have my fingers crossed for you, I know what a worry it can be, you can only try your best and you quite clearly are doing everything you possibly can for her.

*Hugs* from me and a piggie kiss from Athena xx

Is there anything in her cage or room that she could be allergic to? What bedding do you keep her on? I feel like i have hayfever at the moment and yet to work out what i am allergic to in the flat :( very bored of having a stuffy nose!

not sure what to suggest medical wise

I am sorry she seems to be slipping back a little again, it does feel so disheartening when it happens. The poor chewing may be tied in with the breathing issue. A pig who is struggling to breathe as freely as normal will have to adjust their eating in order to stop themselves inhaling their food.

Ditto to Eleanor's questions about bedding, another thing to consider is fragrances/aerosols/air fresheners/candles etc. - are any of these used in the same room (or just outside the room) Midge lives? Is the hay quite dusty? Worth shaking each handful out in a cardboard box prior to giving it to Midge, it is surprising how much dust can be in even the "dust extracted" hays.

Did Vedra specifically say to give both Daktarin and Nystatin? What's the Ibuprofen for?

Re the smileys, whenever the code is used, whether a part of a word or as a deliberate code, the smileys do appear. The drooling one really bugs me too!

All good things to consider - they are on a straw/shavings mix which they have had for ages - and it isn't full of pine smell. We use it on the horses and although it obviously must have dust, I am very sensitive to that problem and it doesn't bother me. I have had problem bedding in the past, but this is good. Also, they aren't directly on it as I have a thick layer of dried haylage (so definitely no dust there. We don't smoke or use air freshners or sprays either. What's weird is she stopped with the squeaky breathing (she sounds a bit like a puppy nursing off its mother, if any of you know that sound). She is sitting in front of the PC as I type, having refused her CC but really tucking into a pile of grass I have just pulled for her. Last night she had a huge supper and I had to take the peas off her as she would have overdosed on them. She's not going for the stuff you'd imagine, like cucumber mush. She has just picked up a big wodge of grass, bent it double, like they do and chewed like a normal pig would. No gingerness, spitting, dribbling or anything you would note as 'aha!' She looks bright and unfluffed but is making these peculiar squeaks as she breathes. And has just now, after five minutes of solid, uninterrupted and normal chewing choked and is doing the I have a thorn in my tongue thing, spat out a fews drop of grass water and stopped eating.

Is it her heart, do you think? She's all hunched again now, done a poo, eaten it and is looking puzzled.

The Nystatin is what Vedra gave her, Daktarin in case it's the other thing causing the sore mouth and Ibuprofen for discomfort either in her mouth or anywhere. She is doing the cross teeth chattering thing now so I'll put her back to bed.
