I will soon have a group of 9 bonded pigs as we go from the rescue and rehome situtaion into a sanctuary.

I have bought C&C grids for spring and summer when thay can happily live in the shed which is sheltered from the sun. However for this time of year I need something better insulated.

I have thought about buying a wooden playhouse or lad's shed and attaching a run.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a good, reliable site where I can purchase one please. Or, come to that, any different style of housing suitable for 9 gps to live together.

thank you
Claire

Hi Claire, have a look on the Rabbits United website, The Duchess is asking for shed/playhouse photos in the "your stories and photos" thread under the heading "Photos Of Your Outside Housing Needed Please for Rabbit Expo". There are some terrific set ups on there, might give you some ideas and I'm sure there are threads about where people have bought sheds etc. from.

Good luck, I will look forward to seeing piccies of your set up in due course:)

I have a wendyhouse which i got second hand off ebay...

The only things i can say against them is... In my own opinion i might add!...

Its a cleaning them out especially if you have two levels... They are never tall enough and my back aches after i clean mine out (i have the rabbits in it), either that or i have to crouch outside the door and brush everything towards me (no newspaper down just wipe clean lino)...
Also dont buy second hand unless you are good at DIY... usually they have gaps in the wood and dont fit together great...

Personally I would buy a 6x4 shed which you can stand up in and to be honest they are mostly cheaper... With Wendyhouses you pay a lot for the cuteness factor...
I will be selling my wendyhouse come the summer and buying a shed...:))

Hi claire

I would go for a shed or a playhouse that is tall enough to stand up in! but i would make it bigger than 6ft x 4ft. i have 7 piggies in my shed and if there were anymore it would be too crowded. i wish my one was wider too, it would be alot easier if i could move around a bit more. 6ft x 6ft would be great!

different levels are ok but do make it harder too clean out(getting underneath them is a bit of a pain) ramps mustn't be too steep and they do take up quite a bit of floor space. they must also have decent sides on as they sometimes push and jostle each other on them, one of mine once fell off:(

Go for a tongue and grove or shiplap rather than the cheaper feather edge sheds.

these are quite good

Also i would highly reccommend insulation to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer.

I heat mine with tubular greenhouse heaters

In my latest playhouse i have scrapped the upstairs and decided to use it as a storage shelf for hay food and bits and bobs which is great!

Hope this has been of some help xx

Am loving your shed Tanya, lucky piggies :)

Also wanted to agree about low cleaning of hutches, i dismantled my low hutches as i'd to be on my knees to clean them out & as i'm getting older my old knees wouldn't take it. Rolling on the floor trying to right yourself isn't the most flattering of poses :)) :))

Tanya thats how i want my shed for the piggies... I think your set up is great... Do they live in it all year round? How have they been with the cold snap recently?

I also agree with the size... i forgot you put that you have 9 piggies... i think an 8x6 would be perfect which would also give you some room to store the food, hay etc in the shed too...:)

The shed is heated (15 - 20 degrees!)so the pigs can stay in it all year round. i have 7 in it and i think that is the max for the size!

Thank you for posting the shed piccies, they have given me lots of ideas :o

this is part of my insulated shed for my three piggies. it's 6ft x 4ft and has an extendable bit which I put on for sunny days. It's an ordinary shed which I had customised with 2inch insulation material in the walls, followed my stainless steel mesh so absolutely nothing gnaw through, and then sheets of marine ply. It's a bit spacious for my three pigs so I'm getting a few more rescue guineas to fill it out! charlotte x

wow that is fantastic! i bet they are loving it!

Oh, they do! I don't want them getting too pampered though... because they'll have to learn to share the space soon! :))

Loving the vet bed on the floor ! Great idea I will put it over the lino thank you :))

I agree with Jane28. When my daughters grew out of playing in their wendyhouse, I converted it into a guinea pig shed. It was a pain in the back when cleaning out as I had to duck to get in and could only just stand straight. rolleyes

Go for a good quality 6ft x 4ft shed at a minimum.

Agreed, re: bending down. It isn't great on the back but I use a gardener's kneeling pad and just shuffle myself backwards as I go! :))

I have a few wendy houses and being little I dont find it a pain really {:| I also have some full size roofed dog kennel runs for bunnies which are great but these were very pricey @) I think if you can pick up a bargain second hand wendy house go for it :)p
