Hi quys, just had a little scare and wondered what the symptoms of RTI are so I know when to start worrying and contacting the vets. Also can it pass on in genes as I know the brother of my guinea pigs died recently with supposed RTI.

When ever any of ours have had this type of infection their breathing alters and may sound snuffly or crackly and depending on how bad it is their breathing becomes laboured ie heavier and deeper. I would say if you have any worries that it may be a respiratory infection you need to see a vet as soon as possible as the earlier you treat it the better. I wouldn't have thought genetics played a part in passing it on but it may make them more susceptible to it.
 
I would not have said it was genetic either but if he was living with him then it is possible that he could come down with it as there is an incubation period. As Nash says watch out for laboured breathing, sneezing, discharge from the nose and loss of appetite.
 
Okay so I visited a vets today without the pigs just to explain the symptoms , she said to check their teeth. Both piggies bottom teeth are really long, I'm taking them to the vets tomorrow but I'm a bit worried. What will they do to them and how much will it all cost? Thanks for all the help!
 
Bottom incisors are meant to be long in guinea pigs and often vets think they are too long and cut them, causing all sorts of problems. How experienced is your vet with guinea pigs? I am not convinced this is a dental issue.

I was almost hoping that their teeth just needed trimming as otherwise it could be something internal and more serious.
