Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the Burgess Excel Tasty Nuggets have different shapes in them? I've just opened a new bag and found a whole bunch of oddly shaped ones among the normal ones. I don't know if they're a new shape, just misshapen or something else. Worryingly they don't quite smell the same as the normal ones!

Here is a pic with the normal ones on the right for comparison:

Thanks.

Hmm, they look more like dog biscuits. I would contact them and see if they will send you a new bag. I know this has happened to people before and that's what they did. X

Mine just have the moon shaped ones in. As Shellza has said, I would contact them. Better safe than sorry.

They might have a new shape, or have mixed up some rabbit ones or something? Might aswell ask them to be safe :)

Hmmm... that's not good. Definitely don't feed them to your pigs.

Flintstones said recently that Burgess manufacture the guinea pig food on the same line as dog food so it seems likely that's what this is. :(

Yes they do which is why I don't buy them, although I haven't seen what there dog food looks like. Ditto Sharons advise.

Thanks for your advice everyone - I'm glad I didn't give any to the pigs! I'm definitely going to contact Burgess to see what they say.

In the meantime I'll have to go buy another bag as I've got none left but I hope it's not going be the same! I think I'm going to have to look into an alternative brand for next time.

OMG! I've just had a more thorough look through the pack as I wanted to see what proportion off the odd shaped ones there were. And I've realised that a large majority, if not all, of the ordinary shaped ones are also NOT guinea pig food.

I tested this by putting them in hot water as I know the pig ones disintegrate almost straight away whereas dog food I've had in the past takes a much longer time and they are not disintegrating! I think the whole pack is dog food or something similar! It even smells like it now I've had a proper look through. If this is the case it is not going to be the only bag - so if anyone else gets this food please be careful to check.

I've looked for a batch number and can't find one, all I can find is a best before of 08 02 2012 22:59. I'm so going to contact Burgess tomorrow.

I'm fairly certain that's the dog food that Burgess do. I would definitely phone them so they know that there is most likely a whole batch that will be a problem. They'll probably give you some sort of compensation, either vouchers or a new bag.

Also, the best before date and time may help them to work out which batch it came from.

Well I phoned them and I've to send them a sample so they can tell me what they are.

I bought a new bag today but was a bit uncertain it was ok (although all normal shaped). The only way I could think of was to taste them! :)>>>

So anyway, I tried one from the new bag, one (of the normal shaped ones) from the contaminated bag and one that I had left over from the old bag - and they all taste the same!

So hopefully all the normal shaped ones are ok and the new bag is also ok :)

Just to update everyone, Burgess have analysed the pellets and found them to be... guinea pig food!

Apparently the machine wasn't working properly which gave them the funny shape. I'm so relieved and quite impressed with Burgess for investigating and letting me know the outcome.

At least you alerted them to the issue - can never be too careful :))
