OK, so all this talk about the different foods is making my head spin! I am wanting to get the girls away from the feed they have come with but I simply do not know which one to switch too as there are so many options, each with their own pros and cons, so I thought I would create a poll to see what everybody uses...

Hi and welcome to the forum

We feed our two boys on pellets, tesco guinea pig muesli and an array of veg from carrot, cucumber, celery, apple (as a very occasional treat), melon (again as a treat), brocoli, pepper, grapes, sprouts, spinach in teeny amounts

they also have a favouring for anything minty they fair put their heads up an sniff the air and wheek :))

Our vet recommends to stay away from the bagged mixes with lucerne, pellets and grains in them. He reckons grass, grass, and more grass, and hay as well, maybe straw, with some parsely and vegges but dont go wild on them. This advice is different to what I had heard elsewhere (which was that grass isnt all that good in large quantities). I now feed them on grass and grassy lucerne hay (which I buy by the bale) and various vegges for vit C. They love sweetcorn (esp the silk from it) and tomatos, and they get a mix of other things.

I use Burgess Excel at the moment and my lot really like it. If i can get 10kg bags for around £16 - £18 then I'll probably stay on that.

I do mix other foods into it to try and discourage fussiness. I mix in science selective sometimes, Cavy Cuisine sometimes and the burgess flavoured one (Blackcurrant and oregano) but the favourite and staple one is the plain Burgess Excel

I tend to feed any - or a mixture - of Burgess, Science Selective and Wagg. Mostly Wagg though, as it is the best value for money.

At the moment my boys are on gerty and ive tried very hard to get them to accept a nugget but they refuse! But i then had a sample of cavy cuisine and they loved it, so I'm now going to get some and mix into the gerty and hopefully be successful!

They also get unlimited timothy hay and two feeding of veg daily to share, which includes different veg's each week for variety. They also get some dandelions leaves which they love and grass sometimes. They mainly have grass in the summer months and have a outdoor run on the grass. I do but some of the natural range herbs too as a treat now and again.

If they only have nuggets, I'd put money on it they would eat them, Mine get excel nuggets but I ran out :(... But we have excel and oregano nuggets, and I mix in some science selective nuggets because I got it free with my girls but its the last one gone. Mine get 2 portions of veg per day, unlimited hay and nuggets :).

They are naughty boys, lol. But i will try again soon. rolleyes

I give mine a mixture! Burgess Supa Excel, Wagg and science selective! So all of the pellets have all the dietry requirements, but they can choose what they like. Sometimes I mix in other pellets too, but those are the main three, we pour sacks into a big box, and stir it up! They selectively feed from these then!:)):)):))

My guinea-pigs have Johnsons food, with vegetables once daily and unlimited timothy hay. Also if the weather isn't bad they go out in the runs on the grass.

Johnsons is actually made just round the corner from me so I actually get to buy it at wholesale prices direct from Grain Harvesters (the manufacturer). I feed the rabbits on Mr Johnsons complete pellets and pay something daft like £8 for 20kg and they thrive on it

Mine are finally on to nuggets after a frustrating couple of months trying to get them off Gerty! They now have a mixture of Science Selective, Burgess Original and Burgess Blackcurrant and Oregano. I read the free sample thread and got all 3 of these and tried mixing them through with the Gerty, the trouble was that one week they would eat one, then ignore that the following week and only eat a different one and so on :)). I was so desperate to get them on to a nugget I decided best they have all 3 than I buy the wrong one and they refuse to eat it mallethead. They still do chop and change but at least I know they're getting all their nutrients instead of selective feeding.
They also get unlimited hay and 2 portions of fresh veg a day.

Mine eat hay and veggies with a small handful of cavy cuisine sometimes for a treat. It's what my rescue and vet recommend. They are insanely excited about getting pellets, and at first I thought I might be starving them but they are fine and actually GAINING:{ How can you (piggy ;) ) possibly gain weight from peppers, romaine and hay?! They needed to gain weight and maybe it's actually muscle from all the exercise they're getting themselves? Aren't we always told muscle is heavier than fat? Maybe I should bring them to the gym and put them on the fat-measuring scale :))

mine get per two pigs : 1 bowl containing mix of nuggets of three makes : burgess excel, science selective and p@h they then get a second bowl of wagg muesli (they are spoilt :)) )

Mine are mainly on Burgess, but if there is an action, I might mix with another variety, so they don't get too selective! They only get a small handful per piggy though as they are all a very good weight in addition to their veg (and only afterwards) and lots of hay!

Mine get Wagg Guinea Pig Crunch, which they love :) It's also economical and tbh, I don't like nuggets, I know how I'd feel if I had to eat them day in, day out lol! But that's just a personal opinion, as I know they have everything they need in them. And when I tried my boys on science selective they refused to eat it!

mine are on excel and being changed over to cavy cuisine at the minute. chesney struggles to chew the excel. :{ (teeth have been checked!)

the cavy cuisine are much better so i am glad they both like them :)

My three are on P@H nuggets. They seem to like them and all three dig in when their dish is offered (although very rarely polish them all off) :)

Mine are on Oxbow Cavy Cuisine because it's timothy-hay based.

In the Summer I won't bother feeding them pellets at all, as they'll be troughing the weedy lawn all day and gorging themselves on dandelions at night.

BTW, is there anybody in the Derbyshire area who normally feeds their guinea-pigs on Cavy Cuisine, who would like to go halves (or quarters) on a 22KG bag (56.57)? We bought it from SPH supplies, but the best before date is 8 July and I'm not sure we'll get through it all by then?
