It says suitable for guinea pigs and rabbits, and I have both. Does it look good? Mine don't selectively eat, well I leave the food there til they eat it all. :))

Also are leeks really that good for guinea pigs? Mine won't eat leeks when I tried years ago. Also aren't leeks a bit like onions? Or are they, I dunno. :)) But they can't have onions . . .

Ingredients:
Alfalfa, grain extrusions, vitamin pellets, corn flakes, oat, wheat flakes, corn, broad bean flakes, wheat, locust bean, carrots, popped wheat, sunflower seeds, pea flakes, leek

Looks good BUT as far as I'm aware rabbits & guinea pigs have different requirements in their food. So i dont know how they can make one for both :S

Guinea pigs need more Vitamin C and rabbits need more Fibre *

*But dont take my word. I'm sure someone more experienced will be along :))

i thought leeks were a big no no?
(i know some people give the top green part, but i thought onions were dangeruous to piggies...and arent leeks a member of the onion family?)
also i wouldnt feed a food made for rabbits and piggies, they have different requirements and chances are it doesnt contain what your piggy needs :)

I know they have different requirements, but if they are getting loads of fresh food and hay then is that still a big deal? The guinea pigs will get loads of vit. C anyway, and the rabbits will get loads of fibre from hay, cos I plan to just give them a very small amount of dry food anyway.

I just assumed leeks were a no no, but I've seen them in other GP foods too. :{

Oh well, this food is like twice as expensive as the stuff I get anyway!

since leek is the last ingredient listed there would be very, very little of it. I don't think they are supposed to eat leek but here I don't think it's a problem.

The problem I think is the alfalfa which is high in calcium. I think it's only good for babies and nursing sows

Thanks :)

Yeah I guess I won't switch them to this food. It just looked nice from the photo rolleyes probably not as nice in real life though, they never are. :))

bit like mcdonalds burgers..they look so big and tasty on the posters..you get one in the restaurant..its the size of a £2 coin, with brown lettuce and carboard tasting meat(?) if you can call it meat!

That's what I get for the piggies. :) It's only €15 from the german site, so it's a bargain and they love it. I have no idea how healthy it is or anything, but they do love it. :) I have to get 15kg bags of food cos I've so many animals, and I like zooplus cos there's free delivery and I live in Ireland, and there's no good pet shops near me (just ones that sell animals in not good conditions) so I just have to choose from the ones on zooplus :))

I noticed that guinea pig food seems to be higher in protein than rabbit food, is that right? So guinea pigs need more protein?

It gets loads of good reviews, I'd probably stick with that :))

Maybe just buy smaller bags if you're cutting down.

I don't really know about the protein thign?

Oxbow Cavy Cusine is supposed to be one of the best foods for them because it's Timothy hay based instead of Alfafa, so it's lower in calcium for them. Not sure if you're able to get it in Ireland?

Yeah I guess I'll just stick with it.

I wish they made a tima pellets for rabbits. They have a mixed food for rabbits, but not pellets. Oh well . . .

Just to add even if you have decided not to get the JR Farm food, when i last spoke to my vet about diet and asked what dried food was best he said, that he couldn't recommend a food to me just what ever the piggys liked and aslong as its given in small amounts as recommended by the maker then any dry food would be ok. He said just to make sure they have a variety of hays and vegetables every day alongside the dry food as the hay and veg was the most important.

But he also said that when he went to conference about small animals the best food to feed guinea pigs that was tested for vit c content, calcium etc was Russell rabbit carrot and leek! He said yes its a rabbit food but the vit c was correct for a guinea pig and all the other levels were correct too, he also mentioned that alot of dried food were the cause for many health issues in pigs and this one had the least amount of additives etc so it came out top above all the rest and had the correct balance for guinea pigs.
He did say this may have changed now as of course many new dry food have come on the market, so the test would have to be done again for it to be totally accurate.

Ive not changed to it and use wagg guinea pig crunch/wagg optimum, i think maybe one day i would try adding a small amount to their usual dry food, but wouldnt swap over. But thats just my personal opinion.

:)

Thanks :)

I was looking at Russel Rabbit for my rabbits actually! I might get it maybe, and try it, and the pigs can have some too, maybe mixed with their pellets. :)

A vet nurse actually recommended it to me too for rabbits.

I thought it was very interesting that that came out on top! Let me know what the pigs think of it, i think I'm going to try and get a small bag from the pet shop and see what they think.

I would assume that the leek in it would be a very small amount as i got the gerty carrot and cranberry and there wasnt that many cranberries in it!

:)
