Hi all, I’m a new piggie owner, I got them a week ago and am having floor time and cuddles daily, one of my girls is very quiet and just cuddles up to me when I pick her up and the other when I hold her kind of rumbles and chirps when I pick her up however when I put them down the just freeze in their spot. Is this normal when coming to a new home and what does the chirping and rumbling mean? X

Hello and welcome to the forum.
How old are your girls?

The rumbling sound can mean either happiness or ‘I’m scared and not happy’
It depends on the context.
I’m currently treating my Merab for an abscess. When I lift her out she rumbles - it’s an “I don’t like this - what are going to do to me?” tumble.
However as soon as she’s on the table with some favourite veggies under her nose she rumbles with pleasure and permits me to bathe the abscess.

Guinea pigs are prey animals and take a lot of time and patience.
It’s good that you are spending time with them.
They will get to know you and slowly learn to trust you.
Freezing is often a sign of fear “If I don’t move you won’t know I’m here so you won’t eat me”

Get to know what they like and don’t like and respect each piggy for the unique character they are.
Give them time and you will build a rewarding relationship.

Oh gosh I don’t want them to be scared! They are 4 months old so still babies I just want to make sure they are happy. I know they like kale and corn as treats but not too often, I tried broccoli today but neither touched that, also tried half a green grape each but didn’t eat whilst we were together. I have piggie cam in their room at night so I can see them and they are busy chatting to each other now and charging about! Not sure how many times a day I should give them cuddles to get them used to me x
