What does this noise mean?

[Hoggle*&*Ludo]

I am still getting nowhere fast with Ludo but I was cuddling Hoggle for ages again last night and I even brushed him!

Anyway, he was doing these really quiet squeaks when I was stroking him (he did it more when I stroked near his rear), was definately not a purr so now I am wondering if he was scared, or whether he just wanted to be with Ludo again.

Everytime I have handled them, they frantically run in their bed and start talking to each other, which sounds like a panicky purr/wheek.
