What hay for my guinea pigs?

Timothy hay is best as it is nice and abrasive for their teeth but meadow hay is absolutely fine too.
I buy oxbow orchard grass and Timothy hay mix, or a lovely green Timothy hay from my local pet store. They also get bedded on and fed just a standard meadow hay.

I used to feed the burgees dandelion one mentioned above, however I found it too expensive for the amount I was going through, they still get this occasionally and enjoy foraging for the dandelions but I have move to using this (2018) 9kg of Timothy Hay | Timothy Hay | Hay Supplies UK

£22 for 9kg, the equivalent in burgees would cost me just short of £60... call me crazy but I'm all up for saving nearly £40 🤣
Ive just got through the first 9kg bag that I purchased in July, so this has lasted me 4 months! I really can't complain for that, my pigs love it, and it's so green and fresh... the only downside is finding somewhere to store the large bag when it arrives 😂

Its a struggle! I buy farm bales of meadow hay and while it is considerably cheaper, they are enormous! If my boys ever got out of their playpen in the shed and into my storage area, they would had a fantastic time amongst it all!

I tend to buy a mix of hays and always check them first.
Poke a small hole in the bag (if there isn't one already) and have a good sniff.
Does it look nice - not too dusty, quite green, long strands etc.

I find hay quality varies a lot depending on the time of year, etc. so I tend to vary brands depending on what looks best on the day.
Plus I find the piggies all seem to have different preferences, so offering a couple of different types means there should be something there for everyone.

Dust free hay.co.uk have really great soft hay. We feed this as main hay along with Oxbow Orchard and Timothy Hay

I’m same as @dannif_piggies ... my girls looooove the Timothy hay bought direct from Timothyhay.co.uk. My husband actually came in asked me what the heck was in the hay as they were going mental for it. It’s smells lovely. I contacted them and asked for a sample before plunging for the 9kg bag

B n m are unreliable with the timothy but not the meadow. In my local one anyway. If you cant find a b n m with stock. Go to the range, they sell one thats about the same. 2.99 a bag

My pigs adore it! Even the newbies Lois and Laine go crazy for it! I used to also find that Honey and Willow would get bored of certain hay after a while, but this gets popcorning reactions every morning from everyone! Amazing customer service and delivery too... unless I come to find a pig that doesn't like this hay I can't see myself buying anything different tbh!

I just got mine Timothyhay and they seem to love it. Its not a bad price at Pets at home.

I'm in northen Ireland so can't get any of the bigger deliveries

I've just ordered some from here Hay Box - Premium Quality Hay Direct from Farm | Perfect for Rabbits after reading several great reviews. I ordered 10kg of both their timothy and meadow hays so I'll update you when it arrives! I love how it can also be used as subscription service to save money. They also do guinea pig pellets which look amazing!

The last lot of Burgess excel we got was a bit yellow and coarse so we got some new stuff to try from zooplus... dont know what it is because the writing is in german but it looks green and smells nice! A mixture of meadow hay with natural forage and herds it was described as...

I have an issue, I will be making a vet appointment. My youngest boy piggy nibbles has stopped eating his pellets! - he eats all the veg I give him though.
I recently had a my 6 year old piggy pass after surgery due to bladder stones. I have felt nibbles bladder I think and it feels similar to the piggy that had bladder stones. - I have researched about it. And have noticed whitish wee/discharge on his blankets. Which may mean bladder stones. '/

It's good that you have got a vet appointment if you have any concerns about a piggies health, however I would not be too concerned about loss of appetite towards pellets, they are a measly part of a pigs diet and some people choose to not feed them at all... obviously you know your pig best and if this is completely out the blue there may be an underlying issue. White deposits in urine are a sign of too much calcium in their diet, this could even come from the water depending on if you have hard water in your area or not. The most important thing you can do is weigh your pigs regularly (weekly) to gather an understanding of each pigs healthy weight, and then if there is ever significant gain or loss within a week period, this is something to be concerned about. But as said previously, any concern is sometimes best put to rest by seeking veterinary advice 😊

I had a slight problem with mine but this wasn't the companies fault it was the delivery depot near me (basically it arrive st the depot after all the delivery drivers left so I waited in all day for it to then be told it was coming the following day) but as I said this wasn't the companies fault... haven't heard this from anyone else and will still be ordering more on pay day!

White powder left behind can be normal if its only dusty and not clumpy or gritty. Try a different brand of nuggets, but introduce with a mix of old and new. Is he eating hay as normal?
