I am feeling quite sad at the moment because my guinea's health just seems to be getting worse. Some of you may have read the post about my guinea's back legs not working properly. Well now it seems she is having problems with her teeth again. She tries to eat most things including hard food but she does this yawning and face pullin which she has done for a couple of months now and thought it was normal but after reading other people's posts I'm not so sure. I took her to my vet in December about her teeth thinking she needed her back teeth cut which she had done 4 times under anesthetic but he said there wasn't a major problem with them and to keep an eye on her. Since then her back legs have gone and the vet just told if there was no improvement to put her to sleep. She also seems to have developed an allergy to hay? I'm at a loss as to what to do now. Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks.

Hi, i don't know what to say, i suppose there is no words that will make this easy for you. I have never experienced this with a piggy and taking the decision to put them to sleep is never easy. i really hope it doesn't come to that for you but you just have to remember thats it better to let go than to let her suffer. With any luck she'll have a turn around and will get better. my thoughts are with you at the little one and hope it all works out fine. x

Thanks, iits just knowing what to do for the best sometimes is just so difficult.

It wont be easy for you but you'll know in your heart whats the best thing for her. xx

I'm sorry to hear about your pig. I agree with Sarah, only you know what is best. I've not encountered problems with my herd yet but I would try and give them all a fighting chance but there comes a time when you have to think is the pig suffering.

Whatever you decide you can count on our support.

Hugs,

Louise

So sorry to hear this. I would always always consent for surgery come what may. I would never give up. My opinion only.

I do agree Lucinda if there is a chance it can be sorted out then it is worth a try. :)

Thanks everyone - i'm going to take her to the vet tomorrow. Will let you know what happens.

Hi everyone. I've got up this morning and I'm surprised to see that my guinea has eaten everything I put in for her last night, despite refusing food last night. She has eaten more this morning and does not seem to be having half the problems. Do I still take her to the vet or leave it till after the weekend?

I hope so. I don't know if she's having problems eating because she is a bit blocked up with the sniffles. She hasn't had her teeth cut for about a year though :-\

I would still take her as Guinea Pigs can go down hill quickly. Best to get her checked out. :)

Hi there i'm sorry i've only just seen this thread about your little one :(
I'd go to the vets and tell them what's been happening it does still sound like toofies or if not, something that they should pickup on O0
Sending heaps of healing wheeks and piggie kisses for your little girl :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
I have my piggies toofies trimmed ever three weeks O0
Good luck :smitten:

Hi everyone - just got back from the vets. One of her pre-molars was overgrown so they cut and filed it down and gave her a painkiller. They said that it should hopefully do the trick otherwise she'll have to go under anesthetic to have it done properly. So glad to have her home. Thanks to everyone for their advice and honesty :)

aww i hope she's ok now...

my Xavier had problems with his back legs which to be fair i didnt notice :embarassed: he used to popcorn alot and just thought his hoppy-ness was that...his tumour was resting on his spine affecting his walking bless him. but i was unlucky.

am glad its sorted however...and hope her leg thing gets better

Thanks. She's eating her ix already but still doing the face pulling. Do you think it could be because it feels strange for her not having it there anymore or is it probably still painful? Sorry if that's a dub question.

Hi rw3399,

Dental work can be done without anaesthetic, you just need to find a vet who can do it. If she needs regular trims it would be better for her not to have to go under everytime.
Where do you live? Someone might be able to point you in the direction of a vet who can do this work without anaesthetic.

Hi all. Ginger is now eating food after having her tooth cut and filed but is still pulling the same faces and yawning as she did before - any suggestions? :-\

Does she usually drink?

I would syringe feed her some water and add plenty of water to the veggies when you wash them . :)

I've given her fruit/veg with lots of water in. She usually drinks quite a bt of water. I usually syringe feed her Potters Tabritis tablets, one a day, and water throughout the day anyway because of her age but she used to take the syringe voluntarily fro me but its like a really fight to syringe her. Maybe she's just temperamental (sorry about spelling) :)

sorry to hear about ginger, hoping she feels better soon. i wouldn't be too concerned about her not drinking as she would get some water from her veggies she is eating. if you are concerned about ginger i would suggest sending maryh a private message as her vet is wonderful and helps vets and piggies all over the world. sending you and ginger hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and the girls send :-* :-* :-* when zoe has had enough of the syringe she will head butt it away or grab it and throw it away. good luck.

Thanks. I'll keep you all posted if anything changes. How's Zoe doing now?

Ginger could have a bit of food stuck on the roof of her mouth - my Tiger sometimes puts his head back and does that funny yawn thing, then makes a kind of sloppy noise in his mouth.. we got him checked out, the only thing the vet could see was a bit of food stuck .. hope Ginger is OK.

Thanks KatieP for letting me know that, it's reassuring. She's still not drinking anything though :-\

I'd like to post a picture of Ginger but I don't know how - can someone help please?
