Hello,

My name is Abi (one of the notable health advisers on here) and I am a qualified and registered veterinary nurse, i have been a full time specialist exotics veterinary nurse since 2013 working in a leading exotic veterinary specialist service in London. In my own time I lecture on all things exotic species including guinea pigs at both national and international veterinary conferences, write scientific journal articles, write for the guinea pig magazine and do my own scientific research. My job involves working with a lot with poorly guinea pigs on an almost daily bases, and often multiple guinea pigs daily. I nurse, anesthetise, xray, take bloods, give my professional opinion and research their biology and care regularly and am involved in all aspects of their veterinary care from birth to after passing. I have also owned piggies for many years and have a small spoiled herd of rescues at home which are also spoiled with the best vet care you could imagine and the best food and life I can offer.

I set up 'the guinea pig guru' as an educational page over on Facebook as i believed that both owners and less confident members of the veterinary community could do with more education and guidance on their basic husbandry and veterinary care of guinea pigs. I am hoping to bridge the gap in also helping owners understand what goes on in the veterinary practice, how disease happens in piggies and how we can try to prevent it from happening. Many of the illnesses in piggies can potentially be prevented or given a better chance of recovery with good husbandry and a diligent owner, so this is the purpose of the page - to help our favourite little squeakers have a better quality of life and vet care. All information given is either scientifically proven and researched or from the years of experience in working with guinea pigs and other small furries.

I hope you find this section useful in gaining more insight into these fascinating little creatures who are far more complex than we often realise. I will bee posting about once to twice a week on subjects which can either help with their home care or give you insight into their veterinary care.

**Please note that I will not be able to reply to any threads due to my full time work.**

If you wish to ask more please post over on the main health and illness section or the guinea pig chat. Or alternatively you can message me on the facebook page where i will get back to you either during a short break at work or after work, which can sometimes be some time later. It goes without saying if you are concerned about your piggie then give your vets a call.
