I rescued two guinea pigs at the weekend and today after letting them settle in for a day I got them out for floor time and a general inspection.

Their nails were so long that they had curled in on themselves so I cut them down to a more comfortable length and then bathed their feet to get the dried poo out between their toes. I am so glad that I decided to rescue them.

I also noticed that one of the guinea pigs has what looks like a scab right next to its front leg/shoulder joint. Its hard and black and scabby but the pig did not flinch or make a noise when I touched it and the skin around it does not look irritated or infected. From the brief amount of time I have spent with them I think that this is the dominant pig of the two so I dont think it is an old bite wound, however I could be wrong.

I am taking them to the vet on Saturday because although I think they are girls from looking, I want to be sure before I bond them with my own two girls.

Ive included a picture, any thoughts are welcome!

Also their fur is clear with no flakes so I don't think its mites or any other skin infection. Its just that one part and the other pig is completely fine, if a little too fat! Diet time!

It's difficult to tell, is it in one of her rosettes? I know you say you don't think it is mites but that is a prime spot for hairloss from mange mites to occur (my Mabel had the same), does the hair look broken half way down the shaft? My other thoughts would be an old wound from either a bite or a skin issue or fungal but see what the vet thinks.

Its not on her hair, its on the skin. I think its an old bite, would it be worth bathing it with salt water? I will wait and see what the vet says, I just hope its not an abscess or cancer :/

It doesn't look like an abcess to me but it is difficult to tell from the photo. If it turns out to be a lump that needs removing then take her to Amir at Vets and Pets in Broxbourne as he is a great surgeon. It could even be a sebaceous cyst that has for some reason scabbed over. Amir would be able to drain it if so or remove it if needed.

If your vet is unsure I can always take a look for you to see if it looks like a skin condition. I have lots of experience with skin conditions in my own pigs and from the clinic I volunteered at at Vets and Pets.

Okay thank you very much. I will take them to ours on Saturday and depending on what it is, I will consider your place :). Fingers crossed that it isnt anything too bad, just a old bite hopefully
