What is this near his genitals?

My male guinea pig seems to have had problems near his genitals since the day we brought him home :(

First he got a sore at the side, I put this down to an introduction of apples and cut them down. It got better.

Then, the other day I checked on his and he seemed to have something (wood shavings) stuck IN his genitals. This went away after a few hours and he seemed ok.

Then yesterday all his genitals looked "open" and odd ... I left him for an hour and it went back to normal ...

Now I've just checked on him and it all seems clean, not sore or anything BUT ... he has a 'bald patch' or a small 'lump' towards the side of his genitals.

He's eating and drinking fine. Seems friendly, doesn't mind being stroked/picked up ... it doesn't seem to be bothering him and it doesn't LOOK painful but what is it?

Is he long or short haired? Looking at my boars they don't have much hair round the genitals or it's sparse. Don't want to make you sound stupid but is this "lump" one of his testicles or is he neutered?

erm, it could be! I admit, I'm a complete novice, he is not neutered so I don't know what I'm looking for. Would they not be at either side rather than just one?

He's short haired.

Depending on his age, they might be dropping from inside his body down into the sacs... which might explain why it's only on one side, if that's what it is. ?/

Yes he should have a testicle either side but as has been said if he's young they may not have fully descended or it could be if he is older than one hasn't descended or it could be fat, i say this because i've not long since had one of my boars neutered & rushed him to the vets because i found a lump on one side & was thinking infection. It was fat :)

It could also be a cyst or an abscess, if you're in any doubt, i would take him to a vet for a proper diagnosis :)

Is he eating, drinking & acting normally? Is there a "head" to this lump or any discharge?

i agree with pigglywink's Rachel, it could just be dropping down into his sacks, and when you said he looked all "open" he was prebably just a little "happy" haha my boar did that all the time before he was neutered, and it smelled HORRIBLE, but thats a boy for'you ;)
