Hi everyone,
I’m wondering what plants, herbs, flowers etc I can grow for the guineas. I already have mint planted which they adore but I thought i would do a whole patch in my garden I can pick for them to enjoy!
Thanks

Coriander, dill and basil are popular here.
Mine also love parsley but rarely get it becasue it is quite high in calcium.

I tend to grow herbs that we will use too, so nothing is ever wasted - this morning I made myself mint tea and the piggies got the mint stalks!

Ohh yes basil is a good one I didn’t think about that, they had that before and really enjoyed it! Thank you

I’m not the most dedicated gardener these days but these two are super easy, chard and nasturtiums! They both grow like weeds and self seed the following year. The pigs love all colours of chard and really like the nasturtium flowers, the leaves are an acquired taste! I personally love the flowers in a salad too, brings a nice peppery kick to it with a dash of fanciness if you have guests! :D

Raspberries grow like weeds too and our tribe love the leaves. Strawberry plant leaves too. Both are more hardy than coriander and basil which may be relevant if you are living north of London... we’ve got some nasturtiums growing but not yet tried them on the GPs.. will try them out as the plants fill out.

Yes never thought of strawberry leaves I have a strawberry plant! Thanks

ooo will have a look for them, thank you

Currently I'm growing some wheatgrass and alfalfa sprouts at my window. Both are pretty quick and forgiving, and it can be fed to most other rodents if you have any :)

Might be nice to have a little pot on a windowsill of something :)

I find my guineas so prefer veggies straight from the garden so I tend to aim to have a selection of types, but especially those that have a short shelf life.

A variety of green leaves (salad leaves, spring greens, pea shoots, lettuce), beans, cucumbers, beetroot, and herbs are great too...I want to be able to grow carrots too as my herd love the greens but so far the slugs are stopping me! I have a small wildflower patch, which I raid for plantain and dandelion among other safe weeds.

There are some fabulous feed guides on here that I'm using to research for my garden growing project!

They love the runners that come off strawberries too, which is great if you're trying to keep the plants to a specific place. A warning about mint though - it spreads like wildfire and will take over your garden. I o ly grow it in pots for that reason.

The tall feathery fennel is one of my boys favourites and it is a beautiful plant which will come back year after year. If you get a secure run then old fashioned lawn grass is wonderful for piggies to eat and fun too.

In terms of salads my best one is Lolla Rossa salad. I had loads of it for the pigs last year and keeps well in the fridge for a few days too after picking. Spinach is also easy and grows quickly.
