i've just weighed my two sows as i was worried ginger was losin weight because of bladder stones. I'm now worried that they are overweight. They are both about 2 and a half. Gingers weighs just under 1200g and cheeky if just over 1300g. Is this too fat?

They're on the larger side of the average sow weight, but that's not to say they're overweight!

You're in the best position to tell: if they can't move around as well as they used to then they're probably overweight. But if they can do everything they're supposed to be doing and it doesn't seem like they are suffering because they are on the pudgy side then they're fine!

You could always take them to the vet for a check-up just to be sure? :)

they still bounce about and chase each other, but they are not as lively as the others i've had. I put them on the floor to run around but they just sit and stare at each other lol. I've stopped toppin up their dried food as the vet advised me i should wait til it was almost done beforem refillin. I'll have to try some tough love i think. Its hard to ignore the wheeks when i open the fridge x

I have 5 sows but only 4 are grown-up. Their weights range from 1000g to 1500g. I recently took Panda to the vets for a chest infection, shes the one that weighs 1500g the vet commented that yes she was a big girl but not overweight.

Thats a relief. I was goin to start guinea pig fat camp cause i thought they were majorly overweight haha x

My 2 sows are both around that size. I think they are on the large side of average. I think a lot of it has to do with bone structure... one of my previous pigs was just tiny. She was always on the low end of normal for weight (never even hit two pounds.) But she had a tiny face, tiny paws... just a very petite girl. Whereas Linney, my biggest sow, has huge paws, a big broad head, a big broad nose, huge eyes, etc. She just seems to be build bigger. It makes sense that that's why the range of normal is so wide- to accomodate some girls who are petite and some who are big boned!
