My accident prone, ever unwell flopsy has managed to get a piece of soft hay / grass in her eye / half around her eye.

It's out but her eye looks so sore. What can I put in it (drops wise) to help with the soreness.

I'm sure the whole piece of grass came out - and she's opening it alot more already so it must be feeling better. But anything I can use to clean and soothe it.

Thanks!

Flopsy does seem to get herself in trouble a lot, bless her. Lucky you're able to spot things early for her. :)

Optrex Eye Wash may help flush and soothe the eye. The only alternative I can think of at the moment would be an antibiotic eye ointment like Optrex Infected Eyes, even just as a one-off application.

Has the eye clouded over or does it just look 'sore'?

It's looking a bit cloudy but not sure if it's the grooming fluid.

I have washed it with warm water so she's got it half closed again and I have put her on her own for the afternoon so she can have some peace.

I am going to head to asda after the school run for the drops. Do I need to ask for either of the optrex things?

Thanks Laura. :)

You will need to ask for Infected Eyes, but I *think* the Eye Wash is just on the shelf.

I'd try the Eye Wash first, if no improvement by tomorrow then move onto the Infected Eyes.

Gwenny had a hay poke last week, eye came up pretty awful but the Infected Eyes got it back to normal within two days! At that time I found another brand of the antibiotic drops, so if you can't get the Optrex Infected Eyes then ask for Golden Eye Chloramphenicol drops. Stress the chloramphenicol part as Golden Eye sell different antibiotic drops as well.

if you are thinking infection (as Laura suggests) it is chloramphenicol eye drops you need. Branded version included Optrex infected Eye, and Golden eye Chloramphenicol, but it is probably cheaper (and easier) just to ask for chloramphenicol drops.
(this also holds true for humans :)))

I have gone straight for the infected eyes. I have viscotears here which a vet has prescribed in another thread so I used that earlier this afternoon and went and bought the Optrex infected eyes after the school run.

Question - for humans it's every 2 waking hours - is that the same for guineas?

Bless her, the eye does look sore.

2-3 times a day is plenty for piggies. Gwen's eye looked nasty but after a couple of doses it looked so much better and cleared up entirely very quickly - I hope it is the same for Flopsy. :)

Me too bless her. I don't think it looks as sore at the mo, she's in a 2 x 2 temp cage and is having a great time not having to share her bowl of veggies :))

I'm hoping a couple of days and she'll be okay.

I understand a hay poke but how do you get a soft piece in it? It looked like a strand or Orchard Grass - it was very green, soft and quite long.

Surprising what they can achieve while just rummaging around! From looking at the eye I would wonder if she got a poke from another piece of hay as well as the soft grass laid in her eye; I can't tell for sure from the pic but I *think* I can see a scuff mark on the eye which would suggest hay poke.

Will upload a pic of Gwen's eye to show you the mark she had.

Happy to report she looks much better! not 100% yet but getting there.

Thank goodness for that poor girl.
