Hi

I think I have the fussiest piggies. I've read the posts on various foods for them, as I am struggling to find a food they love.

My six guineas have mostly rown up eating Gerty. I abandoned this a while ago because it is so disproportionately expensive when compared to other similar products. I later read some information on the forum regarding related health issues.

The problem I have is that my piggies really have never taken to another food in quite the same way. I recently tried a bag I bought at a local shop, I can't remember what it was called but it had all sorts of plants dried in it and was quite fancy. I think they quite liked that.

They don't like Wagg (I think they find it too grainy, they're not keen on anything with a high grain proportion), they turn their nose up at nuggets, they'll have a nibble of P@H muesli, but ultimately they're missing the Gerty.

Can anyone recommend anything taht isn't Wagg, P@H or nuggets that they get on well with? Preferably not too grainy? I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Thanks very much, hope everyone has a lovely weekend

Maybe you could contact all the companies and ask for sample packs of each? Or I am sure some of us on the forum could do a bit of a food swap, send you small portions of different brands to see if your guineas like them? (pelicano did this for my piggies, we are forever grateful!)

The usual brands tend to be:

- Oxbow Cavy Cuisine
- Science Selective Guinea Pig
- Wagg Optimum
- Burgess Excel Tasty Nuggets
- Burgess Excel Nuggts with Blackcurrant and Oregano
- PAH Nuggets
- Wagg Guinea Pig Crunch
- Tesco GP Mix

I have some Science Selective - I can put a bit in a bag for you if you wanted to try that one?

I give my piggies P@H Nuggets. The boys love it, they don't half tuck in. Infact the boys aren't fussy at all. The girls well...they wont eat cabbage unless it's from the expensive green grocers, they love cherry tomatoes from the Coop, but turn their noses up at Tesco. They won't eat carrots unless there juicy. I swear blind Gerties eyes light up when she sees juicy carrots, the way she stands, she looks like she's smiling.:)

My piggies are fussy too, and have tried the wagg food but they dont really rate that. They have gerty guinea pig food and love it. They wont eat anything else! Littl fuss pots! good luck! :):)

hi, thanks all for you kind and helpful suggestions and advice. I think i shall try tesco for now and go from there. I'm off there tomorrow! Thanks again :)

You could try the new Woodlands guinea pig food and forage from P@H it seems great x

At the moment I am using small animal feed from Hooty's but I do tend to chop and change with my food at the moment. Like you, I was a huge fan of Gerty and so were my pigs. Then, all of a sudden, the price just seemed to shoot up, didn't it? I have used PaH Muesli with moderate success and they seemed to be quite healthy on that. I have also tried the Wagg. One of my guinea pigs Gucci (in my avatar) is currently on PaH Nuggets and these are, in my opinion, the best by far, but they are expensive. It sounds cruel, but no healthy guinea pig will starve themselves so if you tried something like the Nuggets, they'd eat it eventually. You could even try mixing veggies, fruit and hay with the food you want to use. I also have fussy pigs, but if they are healthy they will eat anything eventually.

Thanks. And what a dear little picture of Gucci, bless! Mine are on the P@H muesli at the moment and they seem to like that best so far. They don't like the more expensive one, and tey don't like the nuggets.

I agree, my piggies are so food oriented I can't believe they'd go hungry, I think it's a battle of wills, who'll give in first, them and eat all their food, or me and buy more! 've held out each time I introduce a new food, and finish the bag, and they do start to eat more, but never the same as when they were on Gerty. But like you said, the price was ridiculous in the end. I was paying £12 a sack for one type, but Gerty was £28! And I've since read about potential associated health probs. I'm going to finish this bag of muesli then try the tesco, and see after that. Besides, it's not like they'll go hungry, they get a fair bit of veg and hay every day, they're hardly wasting away bless them!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I feed mine the excel nuggets - it never changes so thats what they get whether they like it or not lol
if you swap around too much they become picky...also the museli they tend to pick out the best bits and leave the rest rolleyes

Hey Tallulah. I feed my piggys gerty and i agree it is expensive I used to order mine from zooplus its free postage over orders of £28 so I used to order treats too. But then I went to my local pet and horse supplies and they were able to order me some for £15 fo the large sack! I was so shocked that it was cheap and thought it was the wrong one! But when it came it was gerty, you could try that? The lady was very helpful. You could look in the yellow pages for local pet supplies.

The pet shop where we got our piggies from said to us that they recommend that we continue with the same food that they fed them - Fair enough, I know that piggies can be fussy, best to stick with what they know etc - But what they fed them was Beaphar Care Plus Guinea Pig at a whopping £7.99 per 1.5kg bag! I've looked online and it is the same price and doesn't seem to come in bigger bags :( The thing it, they don't even seem to eat much of it.

I just bought a bag of this to try, on their introductory offer, 2kg bag for £4.34 (full price £5.79). Going to see how they like it.

Very good idea!

:)p

I have two fussy piggies too.
When I got them at 9 months old I kept on the same food they were used to P@H muesli
They didn't eat that, just picked a few bits out , and left the rest.

They eat lots of good quality hay, veg and fruit....is that enough ?
as whatever dry food I try them on, there's always lots of the muelsi/nuggets left in their bowl.
They are lively, healthy and their coats are beautiful.
