Iv had my guinea pig for over a year now, around 6 months ago she stopped eating anything, she was showing interest in food but looked like she couldnt manage to chew it.I took her to the vets and they put her to sleep but couldnt find anything wrong with her. They gave me some pain killers to give her an some antibiotics after a week or so she started to get better and put weight back on and i thought everything was back to normal again. A month or so after she started to go of all her food again, i looked at her teeth and they looked like they needed clipping so i took her to the vets again to have them clipped. I thought her teeth were the problem. Now for the past week and a half she has been of her food and lost weight again i have taken her to the vets to have her teeth clipped and to see if they could find anything wrong but that dosent seem to have worked. She is showing interest in food but seems to be finding it hard to pick food up with her mouth and eat it, however when i try giving her chocolate drops the problem dosent seem to bother her as much She is drinking water and seems happy in herself and active but the problem is worrying me because of her weight loss. Does anyone know if this could just be a behavior problem or a illness she is suffering from? Iv been trying all sorts of things to try and make her eat but she won't. Her eyes and mouth look healthy, her stools have occassionaly been runny but shes still very active. Can anyone help me?
Lucy

oh this is quite scarey, I lost a foster sow today with this exact proplem however mine only had it a week.

Yours sounds like a little fighter though so fingers crossed.

What medication if any have they been giving her?

Lucy first off. Stop giving the chocolate drops. That might be the problem as piggies aren't ment to have any dairy which is in those. It could also be why she has some runny poops. What hay do you give her and how much? what veggies do you normally give her? what kind of pellets do you buy?

If the vet can't find anything wrong then maybe find another vet for a second opinion as well?

As E said the chocolate drops aren't best to feed. Its not that they are dairy intolerant its just that they only need veg, dried and hay and some grass if possible.

If she has runny poops then lay off the veg until it goes back to normal.

Best of luck it can't be easy, I am still inclined to think teeth problem. Is she getting enough vitamin c?

She has Meadow hay. She would eat carrots, cabbage, cucumber, tomatos. I feed her a normal guinea pig dry mix food. i have only stared to give her one or two chocolate drops in the past few weeks as i was trying to encourage her to eat something because of her weight loss. What would be a normal weight for a sow guinea pig? The other guines pig she lives with is and has always been fine. Lucy

A few months ago we had a similar problem with one of our pigs. He stopped eating very suddenly so we took him to the vets who kept him in for a week and a half. They tried everything they could think of but nothing would make him start eating again. In the end the vets referred him to a specialist who also kept him in for a week and a half. Within about a day or so of Fuzzy being at the specialist, they worked out he had an ear infection amongst other things. The ear infection was making it very painful for Fuzzy to eat. They tried him on several different sets of medication until they found something that worked for him. We finally got him home 3 weeks after taking him to the first vet. Now he is back to normal and doesn't stop eating.
When Fuzzy first stopped eating, he showed an interest in food but it looked like it was too painful for him to eat. He was also very alert.
I would suggest that you get a second opinion because the first vet we took him to couldn't find what was wrong.

I would agree about finding another vet for a second opinion, best of luck, it's awful when you can't get to the bottom of a problem.

ps - Lucy, just to let you know I have removed your other threads on this subject as they had been duplicated elsewhere on the forum :)

You are learning the lesson that gp teeth and vets does not always have a satisfactory outcome.

I'd lay off the cabbage, cucumbers and tomatos, Tomatos can give moth sores which could be why shes not eating. Also Cucumbers have no nutritional value, so hey care giving as a treat and because of the water in them too much can cause runny poops.. As for the cabage I all I know about them is that they can be gassy (for personal experence and piggies personal experence)
