I am wondering why guinea pigs over the age of 1 can't have alfalfa. Does it bodily harm them? I can't find any type of food that doesn't have alfalfa as its first, second, or third ingredient. Any brands that are known for not having alfalfa? I am not able to get Kleenmamas.....so if there are any others please let me know!

Hay should be a staple in the diet, and a fresh supply available at all times. Grass hays such as timothy hay or orchard grass are the best for adult guinea pigs. Alfalfa is richer and higher in calcium and is a good supplement for growing guinea pigs as well as pregnant or nursing guinea pigs, but is not a good staple for most adult guinea pigs. - got that from about.com hope that helped explain things :)

Guinea pigs can have alfalfa after one year year of age, however, it should be feed as a treat now and then as it is to high in calcium, it should not be a main ingredient in a guineas diet. Many people feed younger guineas (under one year of age), pregnant and nursing guineas alfalfa as it is good for their development and unborn or nursing babies and mothers, however, even then it should be feed in moderation. :)

I ahve bought alfalfa seeds and now have quite a few trays full, esp since they are really easy to grow. But if its ok for treat then thats ok i suppose.
I bought some plantain as i heard that if there is a balance of alfalfa and plantain its better?
