I have a female guinea pig around 3 months old which I have had for 3 weeks. I noticed yesterday that one of her ears looked a bit different from the other one. I managed to get her out today (with a lot of persistance) and it feels a bit hard and dry, it also looks a bit rough round the edge, I couldn't see a build up of wax inside, any ideas what it could be? Thanks

Could be fungal, that can feel hard the affected ear will also often feel warmer than the normal ear.

If it is fungal you will notice the skin coming off, looks sort of like dandruff and the hair will fall out in clumps.

I use gorgeous guineas lavendar and myrhh lotion when I have piggies with fungal ear problems and it clears it up a treat.

Good luck

Hi,

Both our piggies were treated for ringworm because one them has it in his ear. His hair had fallen out in a small patch around the tip of his ear, he had scabbing and his skin was flaky and dry.

I don't now about the GGP lavender remedey which I'm sure is fine. We were given some oral treatment by the vet to give to the piggies over three weeks. Since then, everything seems to be fine.

From what I've been told, fungal/ringworm infections are fairly common in piggies, especially from pet shops if they've been kept together in large numbers. If treated properly, it's not serious and can be cleared up pretty easily.

I hope this helps and get well wishes to your GP :)

Wax = probable ear mites

Ear mites are insidiuous. Took me several months to realise my piggies had a possible problem as it wasnt obvious at all until one of mine had torticollis and the vet found ear wax...and mites.....So Please get a cavy savvy exotics vet to check PROPERLY.

If so, You will need to "de-wax" with ear drops and then treat with (preferably_ injectable anti-mite stuff rather than topical. Ivermectin is OK but my extremly experienced exotics vet now prefers Destomax injectable (one injection)...it is a newer and synthetic molecule that unlike ivermectin, does not interact with both piggie and mite metabolism )

PM me for more details...my pigs were seeing vets for months and, like me, none of them picked it up the ear mites !
