One of my guinea pigs, Nugget, seems to struggle breathing. He sort of wheezes. Last time we took him to the vets he had antibiotics and for awhile was fine but it keeps coming back. The vet doesn't seem to know whats wrong so we aren't sure whether to get a second opinion or just leave it. What's wrong with him and how can I prevent it if possible? Thank You

x

It sounds like a respiratory infection, but allergies or heart problems are also possiblities.

Is your piggie being given a diuretic as a one off dose at the start of treatment? How often is the problem recurring? What antibiotics and what dose is he given each time?

To rule out allergies, you would need to determine if the bedding or hay is to blame, so info on what you use now may help us help you. Heart problems can be tricky to diagnose but recurrent respiratory infections are often a key sign.

Get a second opinion- sounds like respiratory problems which may be repeated infections or possibly allergies (piggies get them too!). Just a few thoughts though...what are they bedded on? Wood shavings/ sawdust should not be used (though people do use them and they are marketed as safe) as they cause respiratory problems due to the dust particles/ oils in them. Also where are they kept? Sometimes if they are in damp environments this may cause issues.

A tiny bit of vicks on the end of the nose should ease any snuffles but wheezing sounds like he's struggling a bit and you should maybe see another vet- if your vet doesn't already specialise in exotics?

Hope little Nugget gets better! x

P.S. Is there any clicking coming from his chest at all?
