Hi
Just got two baby guinea pigs yesterday which are 6 weeks old. Just found out ones a girl and ones a boy. After searching the web I have read it is advised to have the male nuetered so they can live happily together. What age is this to be done by? Also, I have read that the procedure can be risky. Advice please :) x

I'm not sure what age, but I know you'd have to wait a while, maybe til he was about 6 months? But not sure. It can be risky, so it's best to find a vet who is experienced with neutering guinea pigs. If you say where abouts you live, people here might be able to help with that.

Though there is a chance the female could already be pregnant, especially if they've been together all their lives. If she is, guinea pig pregnancies last about 10 weeks, and she could already be two weeks pregnant, so it will be at least another 8 weeks. If you want more than two guinea pigs, then you could see if there's a girl baby and a boy baby, then the girl could live with the mom and the boy with the dad.

But if you want to rehome any babies, if there are any, and just keep your original two, then neutering is the best option. The only problem is you'd have to keep them separate for a while until the male is old enough.

Hi!

The age at which a boar can be neutered is typically between 4-6 months old, depending on health, weight and physical development and a check from the vet who is going to perform the op. It can make a big difference in the chances looking for an experienced vet in your area, but you can never completely exclude all risks and post op complications. You will also have to factor in the 4-6 weeks post op wait to make sure that there is no more live ammunition. The very odd "golden shot" is known to have been fired 5 weeks after the op.

I assume that you have separated your pair already? There is unfortunately a chance that your girl could be already pregnant, especially if they have been kept together. Some boys can start as early as 3 weeks old and girls from 4 weeks onwards. We see the results often enough in our pregnancy section!

Please don't hesitate to ask for help if you would like to our help with finding new companions or a new, good home for both or one of your piggies in view that they will have to live alone for the better part of half a year, which is not ideal in any respect. I am sorry that you have ended up in such a mess! It is certainly not the way you would have liked to start out with guinea pigs!

The Guine Pigs are only 6 weeks old. Could she really already be pregnant? As far as I know they have been together since birth and I have them living in the same cage. I'm new to all this, and read up alot before we got them, but only just found out they were not the same sex as the lady I bought them from didnt know. Thanks

No I still have them in the same cage :( I have obviously been very nieve thinking they wouldn't be able to get pregnant at such a young age! They are both from the same litter, so if she is pregnant will the babies be ok? Thanks

I live in Edinburgh, so advice on a good vet would be appreciated, thanks.

hi you need to seperate them now, baby boys become sexually active from 3 weeks old and girls can get pregnant from 4 weeks old.

Oh no, I dont even have another cage! I'll need to get one now, thanks for your information.

hi hun have a look on freegle and freecycle someone on there may no longer need their cage best of luck.

You can use a padded cardboard box for a couple of days, but any day longer is more of a chance for her to become pregnant if she isn't yet!
