When Will My Sow Stop Growing?

Guinea pigs come in all shapes and sizes. I think the general consensus is that they are fully grown between a year and 18 months. She may just be a big pig. x

My almost 4 year old boy is short & stout while the one who recently turned 3 is long & thin. Yet both keep a steady weight of just under 1300 grams. There was a thread on here recently about the biggest piggies and there was a girl who weighed over 1400 grams!.

I've looked after a 1600g boar, he wasn't fat, just big. I have a couple of sows currently that are pushing 1400g, and a boar who is steady at just under 1000g.

Healthy adult weight can vary between 800g -1800g without a piggy being overweight. That is an enormous range! About 80% of pet piggies seem to fall into the range between 900g-1300g. Guinea pigs usually reach mature adulthood around 15 months of age. They can reach their final size from 12 months to about coming up to 2 years in the case of rex piggies; after that, any extra will rather manifest as overweight.

Individual body size can even vary quite a lot between litter born siblings. My litter sisters Nia and Nerys were 1kg and 1400g respectively at the height of their lives - but it was energetic little Nia who ran the group of a dozen piggies or so, not her large, but phlegmatic sister!

Because of this enormous range, it is often better to judge a piggy's size/weight ratio by its heft - check whether you can still feel the ribs in the upper body without them sticking out (underweight). If you can't feel the ribs, then a piggy is overweight. ;)

Hopefully she's just a big pig.
My 2.5yr old grace is always close to the 1400g mark -either just over or under it. She's pretty healthy tho :)
She has paws like shovels &is very long compared to my 7+ year old girly.
Here's a link to my thread I started about a month ago. You can see the size difference.

All of mine have had a big range of sizes &all have been girls.

Just like humans, a real mixed bag of colours &sizes :)

Xx

Mine were done growing around a year (they may have gotten heavier/rounder after that point, though.) One of mine never weighed two pounds in her entire life (she was a tiny pig!) and the other two weighed close to three pounds in their prime. All girls, same diet, wide variety of sizes!
