which shop is best? I want a choice, not just have to take the pair they have in so not pets corner.

thank you

As this is a pro-rescue forum I dont see anyone recomending shops as such. There is a section where you can find the rscue piggies looking for new homes x

People might be able to let you know of a rescue near you. :) There are all kinds of pigs in rescues, all different breeds, lots of baby ones too if that's what you want.

If there aren't any rescues near you, then maybe someone will know of a good pet shop, but sorry I can't help cos I'm from ireland. Maybe looking for a good breeder would be a good idea too, might be better than most pet shops.

Have you thought about rehoming from a reputable rescue?

You will have the advantage that you get guaranteed healthy, non pregnant piggies as well as support during the settling in period. For that, you will need to pass a home check to make sure that your set up is adequate for the minimal requirements (2x4 ft minimum space for two guinea pigs) and has winter protection for outdoors piggies. Requirements can vary between rescues.

Here is a link to a list of rescues around the country:

I hope that you will give your guinea pigs a loving home. Please have a look on this forum; we have lots of information, especially in our reference section. Things have moved along a lot over the last few years!

Ok I don't think you all need to tell this person to rescue! rolleyes Yes it is a rescue forum but don't over load the OP! :))

I'm not sure of any good pet shops, some Jollyes stores are good but never pets at home! :{ My guinea pigs were from a pet shop but I got them for my 9th birthday (I was responsible at that age and was animal crazy! Still am now- I'm 14 :)) ) I didn't really know about rescue centres at that age, just knew I was lucky enough to be getting some baby piggies. x)
If I was to get guinea pigs now though, I would go to a rescue centre because I have learnt about how many are sadly neglected and need loving new homes. However, I'm glad I didn't go to a rescue before I got mine because I wouldn't have my 2 lovely girls! x)

Not all of my pigs are from rescue but if you follow on from the rules you cant exactly reccomend a breeder or a pet shop? or am I wrong? x

I would recommend checking out rescues local to you, there are all sorts of piggies who deserve new loving forever homes.
As I' sure you know piggies are happier in pairs/groups if you go to a rescue they will have piggies which they know get on well where as if you go to a pet shop there is no guarantee the two you choose will still get on in a few months time.

Also some pet shops only seperate the sexes when the pigs go on sale, so you could buy two females and a few weeks later end up with more than you bargained for. If you go for rescue pigs they won't rehome sows until they have been on pregancy watch.

Have a read of this thread for a bit more info on rescues :) http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=55233

I guess that it's best to recommend a resuce first. But if the OP can't possibly go to a rescue for whatever reason, then the next best thing is to find a good breeder or good pet shop . . . better than going to a bad one. :)

rescue

good idea, i hadnt thought of a rescue!

thank you so much I'm sure i will be on this forum everyday lol :)p

there is a local rescue near me so i will check that out soon

thanks again

If not a rescue then there's always people trying to rehome piggies on preloved and the free-ads. Just try and make sure they are genuinely rehoming and not just breeders using it as a guise.

Some rescues will allow 'piggy trains' to rehome further away. This is where, for example, you want to rehome a piggy from Cardiff but you live in Leicester, if there is someone nice heading in that direction, they can do part of the journey for you. Just a thought in case you have no luck with the rescue near to you :)
