Which hay?

There are so many types of hay that I am completely bamboozled. I'm going to buy online but don't know what the best all rounder is and what should only be given as a treat.

I don't cover the cage with hay. It's either in a pile or I hope to find a piggy safe hay rack (nothing poking from it). Can I feed them timothy hay as their main supply or should I feed them dry grass or something else? What does everyone else do?
 
i dunno.My pigge had risperity probs cos it was dusty.So now i pay a £5 for it from Pets at home now cause i no its safe!
 
Personally I don't like P@H hay. I buy meadow hay from FOCUS and never had any problems with it :)

When the weather stays good and we get the shed finished, will be buying a bale of hay from a near farm :)
 
At the mo mine are having Excel timothy hay with added dandelion and marigold, and Vitakraft Vitaverde meadow hay with added peppermint :)
 
I use Meadow Hay from Asda for their bedding, and Timothy hay for food
You can feed alflalalalalflflalaa (lol, I can't spell) to youngsters but I've never tried it
 
i find P@H hay to be really dusty compared to some other places, and they chop it up short which i also dont like lol

their tiomothy hay isnt too bad, and all my 7 seem to like it, i buy fresh hay from a farm shop in a near by town, i get a huge bale of sawdust and 3 huge bags of hay for £10.95..total bargain compared to the high street stores (shop around!)

alfalfa hay is nice as a treat but only under 6 months of age, timothy they can have (if u can afford it, one of the most expensive) everyday, meadow hay, and readi grass can be fed regularly too.
 
Thanks everyone. I'm now realising that a lot of you use two types of hay... bedding and food which is why I think I was getting confused. I think I'm going to find somewhere that does nice green timothy hay.

Hopefully they will like it!
 
if you dont mind spending a fair of money www.dustfreehay.co.uk have a nice meadow hay, its quite stalky and sharp so i wouldnt use it as bedding, but all my pigs loved that hay.

ive alsop had timothy hay from www.bunnybasics.co.uk rather expensive again + delivery but they did like that one.

personally id keep to giving them meadow hay, and buy a bag of timothy once every now and then because it becomes really expensive, and meadow hay is normally quite soft for them to bed in too.
 
I don't mind spending a little bit more if they like it but as long as I know meadow hay is nutritious enough for general use that's great. Is orchard hay different again?
 
Planet Guinea sells hay for eating but Meadow hay is far cheaper from your local farm shop (they may deliver too!). I buy big bales of Meadow hay (available up and down the country) and some from Planet Guinea (supplied by Proper Food 4 Pets), all money goes to help rescue guineas and its distributed by the lovely people at Bunny Basics :)
 
I use meadow hay for bedding and Oxbow timothy hay for feeding. Be warned, that if you give your piggies some posh Oxbow hay to try, they'll never go back to the meadow hay again! ;D
 
I bought some western timothy hay last night so fingers crossed they will like it. Both of them seem to be eating a lot more pellets at the moment because they don't seem so fussed on what I have already.
 
the greener the hay the better, sainsburys sell meadow hay, i think it's bob martins and it's really green.guineas love it.
but will be buying a bale from a farm next time to try.
 
We buy our hay from a wholesalers type of place where we get our food from, it's smell fab and I believe they have got awards for their hay O0
 
I use Western timothy hay which I buy online from www.thehayexperts.co.uk for eating. I put it in a willow basket which I also bought from them. When I first shopped with them, I tried the hay samples (£3.99 for 7 I think it is, with free pp) and discovered my two loved the timothy hay, the oat hay and the meadow grass. I use wagg hay from Asda for their bedding, as it is much cheaper O0
 
I've been experimenting with all kinds of hay - from Wilkinson, two kinds of hay from my Post Office shop, an enormous bale from a farm and a large bale from Notcutts. Also tried some hay from the hay experts. I find it hard to translate a weight of hay online to how much you actually get. So far the piggies have enjoyed most of the samples from the hay experts and the Notcutts hay (from a local farm) best for eating. The enormous bale was great for bedding and eating but too large for storage - shame that was a good price - Wilkinson's hay seems OK for bedding but chopped up small - they definitely prefer the Notcutts long hay for eating - smells fresh and sweet whereas the other ones in bags don't seem to smell of anything much.
 
:) I get my hay from Planet Guinea Hay distributed by Bunny Basics all profits from hay and herbs go to Reading Guinea Pig Rescue (and is subsequently spent on quality hay for the guins :) )

Mine like the Alpine and Leafy Green Timothy best. Prices shown include postage :)
