Hey guys
Please advise on the best pro biotic to use for my little guy as he's had antibiotics , he has pro c in his water but heard from other people it's not that great?
Any advice would be great !

I use Pro C from P@H sometimes. But I think the best ones (in my opinion) are Fibreplex which is a paste, and Bio Lapis which is powder you mix with water- my two go mad for the taste of Bio Lapis

Mine have Pro C which they love, but I don't put it in their bottle, as they don't drink much from it. I syringe feed it about 2 hours after administering the antibiotic. Fibreplex is also good, but I find it hard to get the product out of the tube.

Fibreplex is also good, but I find it hard to get the product out of the tube.

I've found the last few tubes I've got have been a little bit runny, and need a really good shake first. when I first started giving them Fibreplex I was syringing right from the tube and they fought it because the syringe part is so big. Now I just dispense a small blob onto my hand and they'll lick it off :P

Thank you so much , would they be for sale at p@h?

I give Pro-C directly in a syringe, mixed with water and all of my boys love it.

I recently tried Fibreplex with one of mine but he really disliked it. The tube is really difficult to manoeuvre into their mouth and he immediately pushed it all back out of his mouth. I didn't try any but it seemed quite sugary. Maybe I just got a bad batch though.

Fibreplex is grainy like sugar isn't it? It's strange.

I prefer fibreplex (from the vet or online) for aiding digestion where there's gas or lack of movement.. Rather than using it for good gut bacteria.

Avipro plus (online) is the same brand as Pro-c (pets at home) although avipro does have a bit "more to it". The ingredients do differ as one of them causes further gut upset in one of my girls but the other doesn't (purely an individual pig problem!). I have found pets at homes pro-c to be just as effective and I use it regularly.

Bio lapis is a probiotic but also a rehydration sachet. If I have a pig with diarrohea from a bacterial gut upset- this is what I'll use. It's fairly expensive and has to be made up with the full sachet at the time due to it containing electrolytes.. So it doesn't last long whatsoever. Personally I don't see the need for this one when there is the others available for a much lower price, unless there's a major gut disturbance and dehydration. Bio lapis is also dandelion flavoured and fairly high in calcium so isn't suitable for all pigs if they are on a low calcium diet.

@Adelle Thanks! I've always stuck with Pro-C but I've wanted to try other stuff, hence getting the Fibreflex. But after pig looking like something out of The Exorcist with it coming straight back out I might try Bio-Lapis next time.

I was really surprised at the consistency of Fibreplex. Orange coloured and very grainy.

I have used both the Pro-C and the Avipro, a couple of hours after an antibiotic dose. Both worked well.

Any of these will do!
Fibreplex contains other things than just probiotics; it is a lot more expensive, too. It is most effective when the digestive system is not working properly (recurring diarrhea, bloating etc.) or a guinea pig is recovering from a major illness.
Pet shop probiotics are perfectly fine as the most easily available in case on of an emergency and when you haven't yet got any at home. They are usually just the unnamed version of a branded probiotic.
Bio Lapsis and Avipro plus are good alrounders; Avipro plus doesn't have added calcium, so is best with guinea pigs with long term urinary tract problems.

Update
Titans has had Togo back to the vets today as his condition hasn't improved .. in fact he seems to be getting worse :soz:

Hopefully the vet will suggest something else today .

Healing vibes for my little guy

Aww poor piggie, hope he's ok.

I have Fibreplex and Pro-C for Oreo. He hates the Fibreplex but will eat some of it. I think it's grainy because whatever the probiotic in Fibreplex is, doesn't dissolve in the liquid bit. The syringe is ok to use for it.

With the Pro-C, he has it sprinkled on veggies, mixed in with softened pellets (when needed) or syringe fed with water if he's dehydrated. I don't put it in the water bottle as it often affects how much the piggie does or doesn't drink. He doesn't mind Pro-C.

I haven't tried the other things.

He's on more antibiotics , more critical care and fibreplex . He had a jab of metacam and sqeeled like a little pig lol ! He's eating food now which is a good sign , vet said it will take a couple of days for him to get back to his normal (greedy) self :) here's hoping !
