Hi,
I’ve read that there’s a lot of veggies you can only give your piggies once or twice a week so how am I supposed to give them stuff every day? This sounds kinda silly 😂 but you know;
I read that you shouldn’t give cucumber too often as it is really watery, same with little gem/romaine lettuce, carrots are too sugary, rocket salad shouldn’t be fed too often as it has quite a peppery flavour, parsley should only be fed 4 stalks a day max and fruits obviously should be fed once in a while as they are quite sugary.... So I’m thinking what veggies do others give to their guinea pigs each day and any other veggie suggestions?
Thanks for any advice

Here are some of the vegetables on my guinea pig veggies list:
Once a week (or twice in small portions):
Parsley or kale
Carrot
Everyday:
Romaine lettuce
Red leaf lettuce
Cilantro
Fennel (when available)
Red bell pepper
3-4 times weekly
Cucumber (1-2 slices each)
Once a week:
An orange slice each or a small slice of tomato

Daily veg for my two is coriander, cucumber, bell pepper and lettuce. It’s perfectly fine to feed a small amount of cucumber of daily. Other things are then added in in rotation if I’ve got them in the fridge. If not, they stick to the basic four veg.

Parsley should not be fed every day as it is too high in calcium. Kale, spinach and parsley are veg which should be fed only once per week due to the calcium content.

I never give tomato or fruit due to the high sugar content and the risk of cheilitis from the acid in the tomato.

there is already some great replies above but I though that I would add a few that I feed my guinea pigs,

Everyday - about half of a bell pepper, a few handfuls of cilantro, a few branches of broccoli and a tiny bit of cucumber skin.

A few times a week - a few carrot tops, a handful of curly kale and 2-4 slices of appleand

A special treat (once a week or maybe more) - a few pieces of watermelon skin, corn on the cob husks, 1-2 tomatoes and a small chunk of cucumber

I hope that helps!😁

I also have a pretty good homemade treat recipe if you wanted me to tell you what it is? They do dry out after a while but they last 1-2 weeks and my piggies love them!🤩

Be very careful feeding that much broccoli. All members of the brassica family can cause bloat so if the OPs piggies aren’t used to eating it then it should not be given in large quantities.

Do also be careful feeding fruit, tomatoes and kale so often. The calcium, sugar and acid content can cause problems

I don’t use pellets 😬I use muesli but after doing more research I think I need to change to pellets
Anyway if I had pellets then what next?
Well I'm from the UK and I use Burgess guinea pig nuggets with mint but most nuggets would probably work😃 this is the recipe:

ingredients - two large handfuls of nuggets, half a cup of water and 1 whole apple

1 - put the nuggets into a large bowl and add the water and mix until combined and quite mushy and leave it to dry out a bit in the sun/in a warm place

2 - grate the Apple (apart from the core and the seeds) on a cheese style grater and place in a bowl or a dish also in the sun/in a warm place

3 - when it has been around 10-15 minutes and the Apple looks like it has dried out a bit add the Apple to the nuggets and mix until fully combined

4 - roll the mixture into balls - this can get VERY messy! - and place on a tray to dry out for 3-5 hours

5 - when they have dried out a bit (they still will be slightly squishy) feed to your guinea pigs! I recommend 1-2 each every day

Note: they dry out fully after about 1-2 weeks and can still be eaten but aren't as nice or as fresh

My piggies LOVE them and I am about to make some more!😂

Fruits (and carrots and tomatoes) should be kept to an occasional treat, and no more than once a week. I wouldn’t recommend you give your piggies those treats every day. It’s your choice though if you do.

I was always worried about the acid from the tomatoes. That's why I only feed them to the piglets 1-2 times per month. I haven't fed them in a while, though. ☺

Hi 🙂
There have been lots of great replies already but no one had mentioned leafy greens/ spring greens which is a lower calcium version of kale that can be fed everyday. My boys love it!
They get a leaf of spring greens, a few strips of yellow or green pepper (red and orange are higher in sugar so should be fed less often) and 2 slices of cucumber each everyday and coriander (cilantro) when I have some.
With the cucumber I find 2 slices each a day is fine but if I give them 3 then they tend to get slightly soft poos due to the water content.
I hope this helps 🙂🙂
