When my rescued ginger sow - Rosie, gave birth she had 6 lovely pups but all were different colours - from silver, black, brown, dutch, white. Not one was ginger like the mum. I`m puzzled as to why this happens. Anyone any ideas?

mabe the dad was all different colours to. 98) other than that i aint got a clue sorry. :)

yeah if the dad was a different colour, his genes may have had the dominant chromosomes which is why they came out different colours.. lol oh i dont knowi think thats the right way around anyway ;D

It entirely depends on the background of the parents and what colours or breeds they were O0

someone is going to tell me i'm wrong but i think it depends on who the father was. meaning like with a dog the females can have say 5 eggs but mate with 3 males and each one fertilising egs so when the pups are born she has 3 different types of pups. maybe the female guinea pig mated with 2-3 males? this is my theory, when we bred with lightning and flash back in 1999 0:) 0:) 0:) we ended up with 2 like their mum and 3 black and white ones(dad was brown and white). hoping this helps. if i am wrong i am sorry. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

Guinea pigs don't re-mate apparently. When they have been impregnated by the male he puts a little waxy plug in to keep his "juice" in and ensure impregnation occurs.

The colour differences are down to mixing the chromosomes and "throw-backs" from the line.

Geneticallly some colours/coat types and are doinant and some are recessive unlike dogs the 'breeds' of guinea pigs don't work the same, from two short haired guineas of unknown parentage you could get any combination of colour and coat type depending on which genes they carry for colour, hair length and hair type O0
