I am quite tearful right now, having just read a post on the Cavy Corner rescue FB page. I wish I could post my thoughts on there but I am not on FB and it wouldn't be printable anyway..
Some kind person had taken an abandoned piggy to them today - he had been put in a sealed clear plastic box and left in the street. Worse still, people were just walking by and ignoring the poor soul. Luckily for him he was spotted by someone and taken to the rescue where he will finally be shown love and be cared for. He looks so cute in the pic, I just cannot understand how some humans can be so cruel to defenceless animals.

It is so sad.
But the person who abandoned this piggy clearly wanted them to be found.
Otherwise they wouldn't have left them somewhere public in a plastic box - they would have let them loose somewhere they would never be found or dumped them in an obscure location in a cardboard box.
My heart goes out to the piggy, but also the person who clearly felt they had no choice, and did the best that they could at the time.

It's so hard not to be judgemental. We don't know the circumstances behind the piggy being abandoned. Maybe the previous owner felt embarrassed that they could no longer give the piggy a loving home and thought that this was the best way. We will never know but can only speculate. It's best not to jump to conclusions in these incidences.

When you say sealed, did it have air holes?

To me that probably makes the difference between being able to give the person the benefit of the doubt, or not.

I agree Cheekypigs - there are ways to give pets up - if you really cared about your pet you would find a way.

Very very sad.

Hopefully they will find their forever loving home very soon.

Rescues have massively long waiting lists at the moment. Some people are so desperate they can see no other way but to dump their piggies.
This is true. It breaks my heart when we have to say no to surrenders. Its not that there's no space its the fact of lack of volunteers, lack of funds and lack of time to care for the ones in the rescue. So so many people "getting rid". Only this morning someone messaged asking if we take "unwanted guinea pigs"......... UNWANTED!? did someone force them to buy guinea pigs? I wish people took responsibility and didn't buy pets for their kids that they didn't want themselves.

I wanted to be a foster carer for the local guinea pig rescue down here but I failed the "interview" because I couldn't comply with their regulations when I go on holiday. :(
We don't use foster carers, well only us lot that volunteer take home any sick ones.

The whole “me, me“ culture needs to change. We are just a throwaway society. Buy now, chuck later! It truly makes me sick. There is NO excuse, I would rather go without food myself than not provide for my pet. These people need to grow some b@lls and take some responsibly, they bought this piggie, nobody forced them. There’s always someone willing to give them an excuse and a way out, it‘s not on🤬

What regulations were those, everyone needs a holiday

That I couldn't put the fostered piggies into boarding when I go on holiday as the piggies had been moved around enough and needed somewhere they felt safe. It would have meant I had to ask my neighbours every time I went away which I wasn't prepared to do.

Oh how ridiculous! If you are good enough to foster and place the piggie at the heart of your family then like all your pets they have to be boarded or they go back to the rescue while you are on holiday, surely 🤨

They would rather have a random unknowledgeable person come in and look after them for a couple of weeks? Crazy!

That seems a rather strict rule. Most people who foster have their own piggies too and not everyone has someone nearby willing to to come in and look after them (I don't). I would rather they were boarded with someone who understands guinea pigs than get in a pet sitter who is more used to caring for cats and dogs. My piggies are all happy when they board, i take some of the things from their cages at home and within a few minutes they are wandering around their temporary home as though they had always been there.

I understand that people who run rescues want the best for their pigs, but sometimes in a crisis I feel like we should be looking for "good enough", rather than the best.

Exactly! I did try my best. These Rescues are crying out for foster carers too!

It’s a case of “cutting off your nose to spite your face” really short sighted. If you foster they should take care of the piggies while you are on holiday if they won’t let you board them with a professional 🙄
Bet you feel really let down 😞

I would have thought a rescue could work round holidays with you, it seems very short sighted. I've always assumed foster piggies are short term anyway so if you had a planned holiday you wouldn't take in more when the ones you had had been rehomed/returned to rescue until you got back from holiday.

I agree, totally unrealistic!

I do feel very disappointed. I know how to look after piggies properly and I have space in my hutch.
