Why aren't my guinea pigs eating much?

Threepigs

They used to eat a big bowl of nuggets each day, plus lots of grass I had cut & veg.

Now they might eat one centimetre of nuggets every day or so and seem to be leaving the veg I give them (though still wolf down grass, when I can manage to cut it).

They are about 8 months now - so presumably eat less as they are not growing anymore, but in this cold weather (they are in the garage) I thought they'd need to eat a lot to keep warm.

I find mine go through phases when they'll eat lots and others when they don't. Keep an eye on their weight and if anything seems off, pop them to the vets.
Ensure there are no drafts where they are as this could cause URIs and apetite loss.

Good luck.:)

My I ask you what kind of nuggets are you feeding ?

Can anyone explain what is meant by nuggets ?

nuggets are exactly what they sound like really, instead of having museli which is a variety of different stuff (most of it they wont eat) nuggets combine all the vitamins and stuff they need and stop the selective feeding (just eating the bits they like). I hope that makes sense!

they're brown and look like poo!:))

Thank for explaining.

I feed similiar stuff. It is made from Vitakraft. In Germany we call it banger :red. They look like green/braun pellets.

But I do not feed them a lot as they make piggies fat. I combine them with dried herbs. They get 2 tablespoons per day. For me it is more important that the piggies eat enough hay and veg.

For outside holding nuggets or pellets are of course more important.

@Threepigs
Sorry for the OT

Do they get lots of hay? They may be eating much more hay (which is a good thing) and this is filling them up more. Pellets/nuggets/dry feed should be limited once pigs reach 6-8 months of age anyway, to prevent excessive weight gain.

What veg do you feed? Do you give lots of variety, or is it the same most of the time?
Any weight loss? (Weigh weekly to track weight effectively; its an important habit to get into)

pepinolito is right that hay and veg are more important. Pellets should only make up around 5% of the diet in most cases.

Acutally CCC4, I have changed our hay recently and it could be that they find it nicer and are eating more. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much if I were unless they start to lose weight and seem unwell. As what has already been mentioned really, give a variety of veggies and lots of hay. My girls go through phases too where they seem to eat much more than at other times. Most guinea pigs prefer hay to pellets and hay and veg should make up most of their diet x

I've recently cut down amount of pellets i feed george as he doesn't seem interested. before I was feeding him 30gms a day and throwing about 5/10 gms away. now i just give him 15 gms in morning & if he eats them I give him another 15gms if it has hardly gone down i don't bother. he is still gaining weight and eating some veggies (he is very picky and changes what he likes on daily basis) and plenty of hay so am not worrried
