Any recommendations for wide toenail clippers for thick back nails? Thanks.

I shall watch this with interest as I haven't been able to find any wide enough for a couple of Nuggets back nails. For those two I use the scissor type cutters. I have the bigger small dog ones rather than the ones made for piggies as I found the piggy ones were too flimsy to cut them.

Managed to find some wider than our current ones so I’ll update whether they’re wide enough for Perry’s thick back nails. I think they were from Superdrug but I’ll have to double check.

Just make sure they are the scissor type cutter, as the more common 'human nail' clippers use a crushing action which is fine for our nails which don't have a nerve in the middle, but would be very painful for piggies.

You need to avoid this type of clipper as it would be very painful for guinea pigs (but fine to use on yourself of course)

I’ve never heard that before. I thought most people use human nail clippers. I’m sure the vets do too but doubting myself now.

I use a proper animal scissor/clipper. It has a notch to put the nail into and cuts like normal scissors. It cuts through thicker nails perfectly, and are also the type my vet uses.
I’ve not seen a vet use human nail clippers before, and it’s not something I’d personally try.

Don’t really get on with the scissor type clippers because it feels like they bend the nail but will give it another go if someone could recommend some?

The key with scissor type clippers is to make sure they are sharp. Depending on how many nails you are clipping then they really need replacing pretty regularly. Go to any pet shop and start with the small animal clippers. If they don't look big enough then look at cat and eventually dog clippers.

Thank you. Ordered some small animal ones and some cat ones to try so hopefully it’ll go well :)

wilkos do good animal scissor type nail clippers, especially for small animals.they are good as the end is firm and robust, the holes for finger and thumbs are bigger than other small animal clippers.

Wanted to update this. Found some great clippers for thick back nails. They went through Perry’s nails so easily!

Ancol Ergo Cat nail clippers. Pink handle.

Hope this helps someone :)
