My poor boy Wiggle hasn't been eating the last 2 days, he even refused spinach and its his favourite. I took him to the vet yesterday morning and she did all the checks but could find no obvious cause for his lack of appetite, she said his stomach was empty and he had no solid poo, only a mucous in his rear. he was rushed to the hospital where they are giving him fluids, meds and syringe feeding him, i called them this morning for an update and they said he is still the same, not eating by himself. I will ring them again tonight after the vet has seen him. Has anyone else experienced this? he seemed happy and healthy and full of beans a few days ago, i'm so worried. I know he is in the best place and my vets are small animal specialists, but i'm hating not being with him when he is so sick.

I am very sorry - I hope that your vet can get to the bottom of it. It could be an infection or blockage in the guts. I'm sure they have checked his mouth and throat?

So sorry to hear Wiggle is poorly. Sending get well wheeks for a speedy recovery..

My girls are sending get well wheeks too.

There can be any number of reasons why a pig stops eating, I am sorry things are so vague in terms of the cause of it at the moment.

It may be worth trying some Daktarin Oral Gel, which will soothe the mouth and might help keep it a little cleaner. Anything that feels "odd" in the mouth, whether it be an oral/fungal infection or dental problems, tend to discourage pigs from eating.

Good luck, do keep us updated.

get well soon wigglexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Speedy recovery for wiggle and I hope you get home him hope soon!

Aww, thanks for all your messages. x .... the vet did look in his mouth and couldn't see any problems, but she did say to give him a proper oral examination she would have to anaesthetise him and she didn't want to do that as he is so sick.
Just a case of wait and see i guess. Will keep you updated x

Whereabouts in SE England are you? There is an excellent vet in Surrey, Anne Taylor; she's at O'Meara surgery in Ewell. It's worth going to see her for another opinion, she can do dental examinations and treatment without anesthetic and is generally very, very good with guinea pigs.

How old is he? He could be shutting down.
Spinach is not really recommended for pigs.
Decent vet. in Broxbourne, Herts.

Thanks Laura, i'm in Eastbourne, surrey is a bit far for me. I called the vets tonight and the nurse said he has picked up a bit and has had a little munch on some carrot and cucumber, but still not eating proper food, they're still syringe feeding him, if he starts eating a bit more overnight and tomorrow, he may be able to come home, i'll phone again in the morning and let you all know how he is, thanks everyone for your kindness x

Hi everyone, just to let you know, wiggle is feeling better, he came home and i had to carry on with the syringe feeding and baytril, we have been away for the week so took him with us, he started eating nuggets again a few days ago, so all seems well at the moment. The vet said it could have been colic! x

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Wiggle and a good recovery!
