just waned to know if dogs get on with gunniepigs? dose any1 know? ::)

Depends on the dog as they all have different temprements. I wouldn't trust a dog regardless of whether it is mild mannered or not it only takes one little snap to cause a lot of damage. I do love dogs but know that even the most loveliest can change like the wind. :)

Definitely what she said! I know lots of people trust their dogs with their pigs but dogs are dogs and instinct can kick in at any time when they see something small and furry running.

Depends on the dog tbh, I know my dog wouldnt hurt my guinea pigs shes good security in the summer she lies next to their run and watches them play, and warns of any cats etc.. i let my piggies run about on the floor whilst shes in the room, shes tried getting them to play football with her it but doesnt work lol shes never left unattended but i do trust my dog with them :)

A woman at my work had her grandchildren's guinea pigs one weekend to look after and their dog decided he wanted to play with them not understanding that in actual fact he was hurting them and they died. But then I was told that cats and guinea pigs aren't a good mix and mine are fine - although would never let them all out together if I wasn't there to supervise.

I don't think you could ever trust a dog 100% with piggies....I have a very mild mannered GSD and he seems quite at ease....but I would never trust him with the piggies.

I don't trust dogs with guineas. It's not the dogs fault, they have instincts. If the guineas and dogs come into contact it's only when I'm around and they are seperated by their hutch or run

Def. depends on the dog - my lab has grown up with the guineas around him and is now quite happy with them being part of our pack - he's not interested in them, but I still wouldn't leave him alone with them if they were loose (although pretty sure he wouldn't do anything, it's just not worth the risk)

BUT my terrier - well, terriers were bred to hunt small squeaky things and he just can't help himself - he has got better, with a lot of work and reminding him constantly that they are NOT food, but if they make sudden movements his instinct takes over and it's not fair on him. I just don't let him near the pigs. If they're enclosed safely, e.g in their runs, he is allowed in the garden but only if I'm there. He's not a nasty dog, he's just doing what comes naturally. I have known guinea pigs be killed by terriers and in my opinion no dog is 100% with pigs - or with children! No matter how nice they are usually.

When I had piggies as a younger our Whippet was great with my piggies. I have a puppy a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and he is slowly getting used to my piggies under close supervision ;) It has already been said never leave them alone together and all will be fine :)

Sadly both my dogs are unable to differentiate between 'chasing bunnies' in the fields and chasing guienapigs in the garden. Last year, despite having fencing in place, one of my dogs broke through a gate and broke into a hutch and killed a guineapig. I can't trus thtem alone together at all, and by that I mean that if the guineas are out int he garden then this dog is not, and if the dog is out the guineas are securely locked in their shed. We now have an enclosure that is dog-proof, concreted base and very high fencing, but I still don't let her out when they are out each day !

I have 2 jack russells and they are fine with my piggies, but they are never left unattended.
They love to come out and help feed them in the mornings, any excuse to find poos and eat carrot. :)

When i look after my mother in laws dog who is a big softy i have to watch him like a hawk. He tryed to grab one of the pigs in his mouth once and i don't think he wanted to play!

We are introducing Chloe (lab) to the piggies, :smitten: she just wants to sniff them and sticks her nose in their sides! They are getting used to each other slowly, but the piggies have wire mesh which is attached to their c&c, so that neither Chloe or Tigger (cat) can get to them when we are not around!

I would never trust an animal around others...

I would sort of trust Sadie with them. I know she wouldn't hurt them on purpose, but she plays very roughly and gets excited easily. That said, if the pigs are on the floor near Sadie and Lexi - my cat - is with them, I am very comfortable going into the next room or into the bathroom for a sec. Lexi is VERY protective of them and she keeps them very safe. She will stand up to Gypsy (the more dominant of the two) if the pigs are involved, and I don't doubt for a second that she would to the same to Sadie.

my dogs and guinea pigs only meet through their cages or runs as much as Horror ignores them and George sits and pines at them you can neer be to sure how they would react if one got out. Next doors cats got in one run last year and he came off worse!

I dont think my dog would hurt them intentionaly but she would probably role on them playin so she is never in the room when there out of the cage. When they are in the cage she just ignores them is completely not interested in them.
The cat however is another story he never gets left alone with them he isnt too bad with them put when he is in a naughty mood he will try to sit ontop of the cage ?

I wouldn't trust a dog with a guinea pig. My brother and his girlfriends dog killed their friends guinea pig which was awful :'(. The dog is normally very well behaved but when she met with the guinea pig her dog instincts kicked in.

my dog is good with the pigs but i still would never leave him alone with them, not a risk i want to take :)

we lost our 2 dogs in january 2006 5 days apart and as we love piggies too much have decided not to get another dog. and we certainly never trust the cats with them. it only takes 5 seconds for a dog or cat to kill a piggy. so in our house piggies come first and their safety. more to piggy power! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I have 2 dogs and 2 guinea pigs my dogs seem OK with them they don't really know they are there just don't leave them alone :)
