Will I ever get a piggy?

I've wanted one since I was little, and my Mum isnt particularly keen on them because they smell and even now I'm moving out to university (living in 'pets welcome' accomodation don't worry) she won't let me get one now so that the piggy can get used to me before the move an hour down the road and there's just so many piggies that I've fallen for (like Choe - oooh I'd snap her up right away!) and its just so unfair lol. Sorry just needed to get my frustration out somehow!

piggies dont smell if you keep there beds clean, and ideally you need to keep them in pairs as they can get very lonely. good luck though x

I'm sorry to say this but your not aloud a pet ad your going to be going to uni soon surly your old enough.:red.sorry not trying to be nasty...also i supose it good in a way *** will you have the time at uni with all your studing i dont know what uni like never went...but good luck in getting a guinea or 2 hope you have fun-c

Piggies themselves don't smell, its the bedding - as long as you change it often and spot clean.
I had pigs while I was at uni, its not an ideal situation tho, unless you are in housing with a garden. Your life will change so dramatically over the next three years, you can't imagine, and a student house isn't always the best place for pets - parties, lots of different people etc. But I am a bit of a hypocrite saying this, as I had my beloved Parsley and Nutkin while I was at uni. But with hindsight I would have waited until at least my second year when I got into privately rented accomodation.
Get a pair if you decide to go ahead.

i also wanted a guines pig when i was little and it took a while until my mum agreed to have one, i only has one and he is appsolutly fine i put a guinea pig sized toy in his cage and he loves it and i even hear him makeing happy guinea pig sounds from upstairs, but since haveing one it makes me want to have more lol but i dont have the space and also guinea pigs really should have a place to run around so maybe think about getting your guinea pig an indoor play pen, and my guinea never smells bad you just have to remember to keep his bed clean.

I will have plenty of time, I'm the type to get work done as soon as I get it because I can't deal with things hanging over me and it will be ace to have some company while I'm awake at 4am doing it. Fair enough about the socialising and partying but since the house is a pets welcome place I'm confident that they will be sensitive not to upset my cuties.

The guineapig or pair of guineas would be happy because I know how to care for them as have had a whole host of small pets before and know about nail clipping etc. And I know I am old enough to get my own pets and make my own decisions but for now I live at home with my parents and they have said they'd be unhappy about me having a guineapig so not ideal for people wanting to inspect my house because I think that would be pretty off putting lol

just some thoughts:
your accommodation this year may be pet friendly, but the majority of private rented accommodation (for year 2 and yr3) is not. Sometimes it can be hard enough finding a nice digs, let alone a nice one which will allow pets to stay. Also what might your potential flatmates think?
Also were will the piggies go during holidays - many halls or residence will ask you to move all your stuff out each term, so they can rent out the rooms for conferences?

Also try and think of it from the piggies's point of view - having marauding drunk big people (your mates, not you ) and loud music 24h a day from flats above and below you, may not be the nicest life for a piggie.

you might be able to offer some piggies a much better lifestyle in a few years time

University is such a changing and dynamic part of your life. I would strongly suggest getting to university first, and settling in for a term or 2, before deciding about piggies.

I have to say that I agree with with this. I was at university for 4 years. For 2 of them years, I had a gerbil which I was allowed with our landlords permission. In my last year though, I had to keep him in my room. University is a very different way of life and a lot of things will change. Good luck with everything though and I think that you will get some piggies but I think you should wait until you are at least settled at Uni first.

hi i know how you feel but strongly reccomend waiting til atleast your second year in uni.

I got my pigs in my second year at uni but then again i wasnt out clubbing all the time like the majority of students and lived with my boyfriend.
To be honest aswell i doubt the students you will share with will be considerate of your pigs, in my experiance the loud music all night long and shoutin, partying etc will frighten your pigs and students are often drunk and so the last thing they will be thinking about is not scarin your pigs!

With the work, socialising and everything else you will struggle to find much time for your pigs and also what will happen at times you go away for the weekend with your friends or something which many students do!

At the end of the day its your choice but atleast wait until you settle in and you will know whether or not to get a piggy!
