Will piggies eat hay that they have urinated on?

My guinea pigs are kept on fleece and mats, so they have a litter tray full of Ad-lib hay (topped up throughout the day, changed and re-filled every day). My concern is the like to sleep in there sometimes, and they pee in there. I do change the hay (even though it costs a fortune as I throw so much away); but my worry is if they eat the urine soaked hay will they become ill from it?

I don’t tend to use hay racks as I heard it can slow down consumption of hay and I want them to continuously eat.

many thanks for any help!

They won’t get ill from eating hay they have pee’d on. Hay waste is a thing with guinea pigs that can’t be changed or prevented. As for sleeping in it, that’s comforting to them I guess. My boys love sleeping in their hay tray. One in particular does it a lot, even going so far as to lie down while chomping! But the other has learnt to do the same.

As long as you change it regularly and clean out any poo they are okay ☺️

I don’t think they would eat the hay as they would smell the urine, not the hay, so they probably wouldn’t eat hay they urinated on, my piggie doesn’t eat anything she urinates or poops on.

I find it amazing how piggies are so different - my little boys will never wee in their hay trays but I have to change my girls' tray so often as it's pretty much their toilet. Sort of makes it easier to clean I guess, but makes for a lot of wet hay to throw away!
