Hello my boys are 5 weeks and having had several boys before I know they can have a spot of bother with their bits and pieces. I bathed them 2 or 3 times a year and intermittently checked their penises which would have gunk and hay/shaving bits stuck up their sheath, oh and on occasions one in particular would have what I now know as - sperm rods! I bathed them with cotton wool in between baths or just washed that area in winter.

They never suffered any trouble really but I wondered how often should they be checked etc? They will be coming in next week and on fleece totally (they are mostly on it now but have a straw packed house with their snuggle pad) and will just have hay which should help their bits and pieces stay healthy :))

I bathed Rodders, cut his nails, checked his teeth and his bits once a month. Unless of course I noticed something poking out!

Some people check more regularly, but I dont want to be poking around in that area un-necessarily

I visually check Tufty every time I handle him to check if he has any hairs or hay stuck in him. If they are missed then it could lead to injury and infection. It's a habit I've got into since he was neutered and a habit I will maintain. Being a boar myself, I empathise with him completely. LOL.

Hi

I have two boys who are ten months and while I always check their bottoms I don't actually know how to check their bits and what I should be checking for and don't want to hurt them

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

I'm sure there's a sticky (not a pun) somewhere on here, but I can't find it at the mo.

I've tried (and failed) to find a sticky too.

I have seen lots of posts mentioning boar glue and sperm rods :{ and have no idea what I should be looking for!

We actually had a tutorial on this over the weekend by the lovely ladies at Palace Piggie Rescue, while they were health checking Darwin before he was introduced to his new friend. It was enlightening!

I still don't know what a sperm rod looks like, but it looks like all kinds of things can get stuck in there! Is this reference any use?

Thats very handy thanks. I have never attempted to extend their penises :{ but have more of an idea of what to look for any potential problems

Glad I could help! We came home and checked our other two boys...and now i've done it a couple of times I feel more comfortable with it (not sure the boys enjoyed it though!).

Oh, incidentally, apparently 'boar glue' looks a bit like kitchen sealant when it, um, dries :{

i usually sit the boys on my lap and spread apart their testicles to make sure theres nothing stuck between them (yuck). and i do it every night because my boys are notorious for having hay stuck in there...rolleyes...its not fun for either of us, but id feel terrible if they got an infection.

wicked link, I recal the... ahem 'features' from my older boys and using a cotton bud on their bottoms to remove debris such as hair (one was very long haired) and shaving particles....the smell is positively awfull from that area, but no impaction thank goodness. I wonder if it is more common in piggies who do not receive a good and variedn diet and not enough roughage such as hay hmmm?

As we have 2 girls I used to read with interest what was said about boys "bits" - I have to say that the first time I saw Bumbles penis (our boar) I didnt realise thats what it was- thought it was a bit of hay (lucky I didnt try and pull it off - no pun intended) - didnt realise they had such big testicles either - Bumbles only 4 1/2 months but when he stands up on his hind legs it looks like he is sitting on two space hoppers:)) - saying that I do have a looksee to see if anything is caught - but he tends to self clean a lot by way of dragging it accross the floor in front of the girls run (surprised he hasnt got carpet burn ) and reminds me I must get the carpet cleaned - I give him a bath every couple of weeks now he is over 3 months old ,but would be good to know what I can actually do with a wiggling pig and his bits:))

Wish i hadnt opened that link as i was eating toast at the time :)>>> LOL

I tend to rigerously check my boys bits when i weight them every week, however i do have a quick peek when i handle them too. I find if they do have anything stuck they dont put up a fight for me checking. If they are fine they wiggle like crazyyyy! :)

Its sometimes more difficult than others, but you should be able to feel a solid shaft just above his testicles, if you press this (its shouldnt need to be hard, if your having to press hard it must be at the wrong angle) then the penis should gradually appear, just give it a quick rinse and remove any debris. :) Just takes practise.
