I recently switched the guinea pig cage up a little and started putting hay in this one corner which they decided to turn into a toilet… Though I’ve noticed recently when cleaning that the corner smells quite bad and like fish? It isn’t the guinea pig pee itself as their fresh pee smells like nothing and has no strong odor at all,it’s just overtime it starts smelling quite bad especially on a few day old fleece. Is this just due to pee and poo buildup overtime on the hay or something? Or is there a deeper concerning problem I’m not aware of.ps I spot clean 1-2 times a day,and change the fleece once a week, though now thinking of changing it twice a week as I’m worried for the cage hygiene

One of my boys uses his hay pile as a potty. I have a bath mats underneath that I change every other day at most. I put bath mats/pee pads everywhere that gets regularly peed on to save changing the main fleece.

Next time you clean try using a white wine vinegar solution
Like @fluffysal I use bath mats on top of the fleece to help absorb the wee.

We always advise a vet trip with any concerns. A vet would rather see a concerned owner with a piggy who turns out to be fine than a piggy who is too ill to be helped.
