My two boars Clegg and Wallace are housed on puppy pads and fleece and are now cleaned out every day. I've noticed the puppy pads have had reddish/brown urine stains on them and am hoping that it is just the oxidation that I have read about or because of diet (e.g carrots). I haven't noticed any squeaking when weeing but hoped someone could just confirm that it doesn't look like blood is present. The first picture shows one of the puppy pads disposed of during cleaning out. The second and third pictures show fresh samples of Clegg and Wallace's wee as I got them out tonight so that I could inspect it as soon as it was produced.

That looks like normal oxidised pee to me, as it does when it ages. Nothing to worry about.

If there was blood in the pee, you'd either see red dots in the middle of the puddle or a red ring in a distinctively different reddish hue on the outside of the puddle, depending on how much blood is in the urine. Because blood has got a slightly different specific weight, it doesn't mix evenly when it dries. ;)

Oh thank goodness. Once again Wiebke you've come to my rescue! Unfortunately I suffer with anxiety issues and everything is a worry for me particularly when it concerns my pets as they mean the world to me. Thank you again for helping me and so promptly too!

We have all paniced at this in our time as piggy slaves. Still catches me unaware at times now.... Glad all is okay

Sorry guys but I'm panicking again! I found this puppy pad tonight when cleaning out the boys and this time the wee is quite pink. This was the only puppy pad like it. Again, I have taken both boys out in turn and made them sit on my lap until they wee'd on a clean puppy pad both of which produced normal clear wee and again no squeaking when urinating. Is this likely just oxidisation again? It doesn't really look like how Wiebke describes blood in the pee i.e. red dots in the middle of the puddle or red ring outside of the puddle but I just am concerned it looks "too pink". Does anyone have a picture of what it would look like if blood was present? The first picture shows the puppy pad after I removed the lining and the 2nd picture is of the back of the puppy pad as this shows the pinkish colour better... Really, really sorry to bother you again - blooming anxiety.

Try to get them to pee on a white towel or a piece of plain kitchen roll.

I use puppy pads in my cage and I've found that the chemicals inside the pad can make the wee dry some really scary colours.

Really hard to tell. What. I would say is get some urine test dipsticks from Amazon, then you can test wee for blood. Oxidisation does occur often with wee so it can be hard to tell. In the absence of squeaking when weeing I wouldn't be concerned at this stage especiLly as wee is coming out clear. It would also be against the odds to have two piggies weeing blood at same time. X

Thanks Jaycey. That's interesting to know about the chemicals making the wee go funny colours. I have indeed got them to piddle on a white towel and have posted the photos below... Photo 1 is Clegg's and Photo 2 is Wallace's. As you can see, no red or pink - just clear.

Thanks sport_billy. I'll order some dipsticks from Amazon - will this freak me out and make me worry even more though?! I understand it would be unusual for both piggies to be weeing blood at the same time - I just wanted to find out which (if either) was peeing pink! Fortunately it looks like (and I'm hoping) it is neither!

I have a picture of blood in wee. I found this when cleaning out, it was fresh so still very red.
This was Panda's, and within an hour of finding this he was pts. So it is an extreme amount of blood. He'd had recurring bladder stones before and I had never seen any blood in wee. The vet thought he may also have had a tumour in his bladder. He'd also been showing signs that his kidneys weren't working so well, so he really had a lot of problems.
I'll try to put a gap in now so if anyone doesn't want to see blood they can hopefully avoid looking.

You can imagine the fear I had when I saw this:

I think the red patch on the right of the picture is actually dye from the printing on the paper, not another bloody wee.

Oh my goodness - you must have been frantic! Thank you for sharing this with me. I am so very sorry for your loss. xx

Yes, frantic is the word. It was pretty awful, finding that. But, it wasn't unexpected as we knew Panda was not well. We were lucky to have him for as long as we did.
