hi there i wanted to ask about giving xeno 450 orally my vet said it was better but i would like ** opinion, it started when i got mica and seth, and luke their monthly spot ons, mica went into a fit, shortly after seth and luke had the same fit, the vet said they cannot tolerate the topical spot on and that i would have to give them it by mouth, i want to know is this safe, as mica is 6 years old, seth, is 9 years old, he has a grade 2 heart murmur, and luke is 3 years old. and can anyone give me ideas on how to help ease their itch, as i was told no bathing, or adminstering any topical ointments.

please help thanx donna

I would ask the vet to give the ivermectin by injection or alternatively Panomec (the injectible form of Ivermectin) can be given orally at a dose of 0.1ml. I know of a few vets that do this and it is done at the Guinea pig clinic in Broxbourne.

As for itching, it may be that they can have a course of steroids but you would need to discuss this with your vet especially if one of your pigs is on heart medication. My gertie had a course of Prednisolone a few years back which broke the itch and scratch cycle. The other option is Children's Piriton at a dose of 0.2ml twice a day if you are happy to give non veternary medication, again you could discuss this with your vet.

I don't like spot on and have seen lots of evidence of pigs reacting badly to it.

That's ok, just check with the vet that the pig with the heart murmur is ok to have them as am not sure how they affect heart meds if he is on any. My Gertie was not on heart medication when she had them.
