I've just treated my sows for mites and was wondering whether to treat my baby piggies too but they are very young so very reluctant. What age should they be before you can treat them? Also I take it you can't use Xeno 450 on the mum until she stops feeding them, is that right?

You don't need to treat other piggies for mites unless they are showing symptoms of mites. If the babies are showing signs then I'm really not sure what age they need to be.

I have treated baby piggies from as young as 2 weeks old.
They're mum had mites when they were born and they were also scratching and starting to lose hair.
1 treatment worked great.

You can treat a nursing sow is neccessary, although if she is not uncomfortable I would leave it.

The Sow I mention above was treated when nursing her babies and I didn't have any problems.

I personally wouldn't treat any guinea pig for mites unless it actually has them -say it has bald patches and is scratching like mad, this is usually a sign of mites. If they aren't showing any signs I wouldn't treat them.:) From what I have been told, mites are in the individual pigs themselves and can come out when the pig gets ill or stressed - they aren't contagious although some vets think they are. I have had a guinea pig with mites living with other guinea pigs who didn't get mites.

You would probably be better with Xeno-50 for smaller pigs.

I would err on the side of caution and not treat. When my gang had mites this summer I couldn't use lice n easy on my pregnant sow and had to buy a special melt and shampoo just for her.

Mites and lice are completely different, Lice and Easy is for lice and cannot be used on a pregnant sow.
Lice live next to the skin and are visible. Mites live under the skin and can be fatal in guinea pigs.
Ivermectin is safe to use on nursing sows and babies if treatment is really needed. Remember to weigh your piggies to ensure the correct dosage.

I do know the difference between mites and lice and just realised my typo Sorry. They had lice not mites just had mites on the mind due to the threadmallethead I really should read things back before clicking submit:)

Thanks for all the advice!

I think I will leave mummy and baby pigs for now... they do scratch but no hair loss and they don't seem uncomfortable. At least now I know that I can treat should it become necessary.
