I have heard Yankee candles can be bad for guinea pigs, I currently have one in my room high up near an open window to try to mask the guinea pig smell as they are indoors at the moment. I have put them in a temporary run in another room while I clean out. My question is, is it just the smoke that affects the GP's? Or the smell too? I don't want them to be affected when they come back in after its been burning.
Thank you :)

Anything scented and smoking is not recommended in the same room as guinea pigs, as their respiratory system is much more sensitive than a human's.

@Wiebke is very right.

Why would you want to remove the guines pig smell! It is lovely. If you can smell poo and dirt, then there is a problem with the bedding.

Don't worry, it isn't me wanting to get rid of the smell! I'm 18, therefore live with my parents and my dad isn't an animal lover like I am haha! No, they get cleaned out morning and evening before piggie bedtime!

Haha, I see. :)

Please don't use candles, room sprays, cleaners, deodorant etc in the same room as your pigs. Vedra at the CCT used to say that any of these things can cause neurological damage &/or affect their breathing. I don't know if there is any truth in this but personally I won't take the chance. If you are doing a full clean out twice a day they shouldn't smell at all? Or are you just poop sweeping? What bedding do you use?

The smell isn't my problem, personally I can't smell anything. My dad is the one who complains! They're extremely clean piggies! All newspaper gets taken out twice a day, and given fresh again, they have paper shreddings.

I've never sprayed or lit a candle to be clear on this, my whole question was just to ask if it still harms them when it's out. I already knew not to light a candle while they're in the room, I just wondered is it still affecting them the same way about half an hour after I've blown it out.

Yes it does, because the oils in scented candles emit fumes which will remain in the air in the room even when put out. If you are using paper bedding then the paper will start to smell unfortunately, I use paper in my litter trays & I change them 3 times a day, plus wash the tray out daily as well but find they smell more than fleece does :)

I never knew this at all! So glad you posted this as I burn candles and wax melts ALL the time! I hope I haven't harmed my lil fellas! :(

Me too! Hadn't realised, I treated myself to a christmas candle - only lit it a few times and have just packed it away - it will stay packed next year!

I stopped burning candles years a go when we got our birds. Its hard at Christmas when you get them for presents they just sit collecting dust :D

Not heard of this before!

My piggies have got an automatic air freshener spray above them, it's been there for years, with a number of guinea pigs, never had a problem!
