Well my mum has finally agreed to go to the local sanctuary :)
I am going to see which piggies are about and find out about everything and then see if we can organize boar dating etc. I am excited! hopefully having mum seeing a cute piggy and giving her some puppy dog eyes will help to speed things along ;) x

Hey :) just got back. We went and had a look at the pigs. We were told that a batch of 21 of these adorable guinea pigs came in because apparently this woman kept a few of them in her front garden and people would throw unwanted guinea pigs in there with hers and she ended up having too many to cope with :( I had a look around at them all, some young sow had babies, they were all so beautiful looking.
Well the fella showing us the pigs didn't really seem to know what he was on about since I told him I was looking for a male to bring home to my current male. He asked if mine was neutered, I said no, and then he told me that its best to have McMac done as neutered males get on best since they don't have any testosterone....:{

He then suggested that I adopt a neutered female (?!) as they would get on best with my male. He handed me this adorable young female that was white with black patches and I fell in love! He went to check if she was neutered which I knew she wouldn't be anyway. Guinea pigs clearly weren't his area of expertise eh?

Anyway while we were stood waiting we were looking around the other guinea pigs and these two little boys stood right out :) They were both ginger, one with red eyes and another with brown eyes and they had such character and there was just something about them that I loved. I so just wanted to buy some cages, take the two boys home AND the little female I was holding (although I had no idea how lol) but mum shot me down by saying she would only let me have the one to go with McMac (although she clearly loved all 3 of those piggies anyway rolleyes)

So he came back and was told female pigs can't be spayed because its dangerous and said if I did want the female I would have to get McMac done.
So I left without a guinea pig :( I wasn't sure how to get around the whole "McMac needs to be neutered" situation. I know he doesn't need to be done but they didn't seem to know that did they :(
Ahhh dear. I am going to head back again soon and ask for someone who knows about guinea pigs and hopefully then I can get a little more help. This fella clearly cared about animals (telling us about all the animals he has at home) and was very friendly and everything but not much help in the piggy department.
Better luck next time I guess lol

What's your travel situation like?

There may be some piggy specific rescues near you or maybe slightly further afield and people might be able to meet you half way or arrange a piggy train etc.

Well done to your mum - thought she would relent in the end - happy piggy hunting :)):))

Well my mum and stepdad would be able to drive me anywhere as long as it isn't too far away or anything :)
I live in Pymouth, Devon so if there are any rescues around that people know about ill be more then happy to go check them out
Or like you said if anyone feels like meeting hafway or a piggy train ill see what i can do :)

Yeah she really did love them :)) when I suggested getting another cage and just taking all 3 home she did pause and think for a second before saying that we had no room. I could have almost done it lol

aww congrats, so glad you got your mum to see it would be best to get mcmac a friend!

But yes, you really don't have to neuter mcmac, it won't make any difference to behaviour and it can be risky. A young boar often works best, good luck! :))
