Hey all,

I wonder if someone can help with advice I’ll explain everything in detail and happy to provide further if needed. So our 1 guinea pig Doob started itching and going red, then on the vets recommendation used a frontline drops Type and we also swapped their bedding (sawdust) for the eco paper one this didn’t help, no he has gotten a lot worse he’s smelling like a yeasty sort of smell really is quite strong and can also see white patches and scabs over him ☹️

Took him back to the vets, and they gave him a course of medication so he’s on this twice per day but although in his general self he’s still happy and still eating doesn’t look like it’s going away as we’d like.

Sorry for the long story - thanks all

What medication is he taking now? Although of course we can't diagnose from a description it does sound rather like a fungal infection, is that what he is being treated for?

Hey thanks for your fast response, no I understand they just wanted to see if there was more I could do for him, yes he’s currently on 2 medications;

Sulfatrim and Itrafungol 😀

Hi!

Can you please post a picture of your piggy (preferably clean and well lit) and tell us what medication your vet has given you? This will give us an idea what your vet is treating for.

It is most likely a case of ringworm (fungal infection) rather than mange mites you are dealing with.
What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness) (includes mange mites and ringworm)
Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

The yeast smell makes me wonder whether you are dealing with a systemic fungal infection.

How piggy savvy is your vet seeing that he wasn't prepared to diagnose a common skin problem (mange mites or ringworm) in newly bought guinea pigs.

Can you also please add your country; we have members and enquiries from all over the world but our default advice is UK based.

Thank you,

Yes of course the Vet has given him Sulfatrim and Itrafungol and i’ve just taken a photo which I’ll upload it’s quite hard because he doesn’t let you touch him he’s in pain bless him.

Yes we are in the U.K. 😊

Good, so your vet is treating for systemic fungal infection (itrafungol). Sulfatrim is an antibiotic.

Please carefully read our ringworm care guide in my previous post. Ringworm is by far the most aggressive and contagious fungal skin infection and by the most transmittable problem between species (including humans). Invisible ringworm spores are very long lived, so good hygiene is paramount. In over a dozen years we have just about found all the possible ways transmission can happen and how to deal with it - from protecting yourself, deep cleaning the cage and its surroundings, and any fabrics your piggy is coming into contact with. Also how to prevent an outbreak in the companion and a return of infection in the affected piggy.
Here is the guide again; it is as detailed and precise as I have been able to make it: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
If your piggies were newly bought and you have seen a vet within 2 weeks of purchase, then you can reclaim any vet cost from the shop. It comes under your customer rights for having been sold faulty ware.

Your best friend is a disinfectant called F10; it is widely available online.

PS: Here is our list of recommended UK vets: Recommended Guinea Pig Vets

Thank you so much for this very very helpful indeed! Just been reading though all the articles you sent me, OK I will buy F10 online now is there another name it maybe called?

I didn’t realise that we could catch it so will make sure I use gloves when giving him he’s meds and washing before and after touching to keep the spreading low.

Also he’s not a new piggy we’ve had them around 2 years now.

Thanks again really helps a lot

Scott 😊 poor little piggy I’m sure we’ll get him back to his Cherpy, cheeky self!

By far the best cleaning product is f10 veterinary disinfectant. You can buy it ready made (mixed up) in a trigger spray bottle. You can buy it on Amazon or EBay or from other sellers like Viovet

Thanks everyone for your advice it’s very much appreciated and I’m sure Doob will be squeaking thanks youuuus too 😃

Do you recon this started from the hay? Or sawdust Is there alternatives?

I did try the Eco bedding (paper Type) and they didn’t like that they was throwing it out fussy things LOL!

Mites or fungus can be caught from contaminated bedding. There is no alternative to hay though - they require it in their diet constantly so if you are concerned you had a bad batch, then removing it is a good idea, but they need hay constantly

Yes that’s what I thought, I brought new hay new batch and binned the old one just incase, with the bedding I suppose it’s trial and error ill keep looking for stuff in that case I did read that freezing the sawdust helps kill off things but don’t know if this complete nonsense so haven’t tried it yet 🤔

Just to update my guinea pig Doob actually had to be put to sleep, I took him
Back to the vets as he wasn’t really moving much and his breathing surrounded shallow too, was devastating seeing him like that, he’s now at rest and of course out of pain ☹️ thanks for all your support x

I’m sorry to read your update post and that you’ve lost him. Popcorn free little one.
