I want to know all about your very first guinea pig/s

Mine was a tri coloured boar called Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds I just called him Mal tho :))

He was a birthday present off a friend - she knew I wanted one it wasn't just a whim buy

At the time I didn't know guinea pigs should be kept in pairs and I had him on his own in a cage that I now know was a bit too small for him :(

I didn't have Mal very long - My then Boyfriend decided to get rid of him behind my back :( I'd only had him a couple of months 8...

The only upside is that I know the person he went to, I just didn't have the guts to demand him back as I was much younger at the time. Also she was under the impression I knew about and wanted him rehomed - to this day she doesn't know the truth.

The lady he went too upgraded his cage to a nero 4 straight away and spoils him rotten as he is still alive today =D

Mal turned out to be VERY antisocial and does still live on his own.

Aww man that's such a shame on both you and Mal :(
What on earth made him do that? I hope you tore him a new one for it! I know I would have done :a19:

Well Hamish was/is my first guinea pig, and I've updated everything I can on him so far so I have nothing really to say :))

Looking forward to hearing everyone elses stories though ^^

My first piggies were Farquhar & Bob who were sows. Farquhar is obviously the little piggie in my avatar and Bob had a black head and bum with a big white stripe round the belly. I really didnt know anything about piggies when I first got them, but have slowly built up my knowledge over the years. I too kept them in a cage that I know now was too small, but they were very content piggies and lived to be 4 & 5. I was absoloutely devestated when Bob died. I didnt realise how much these little animals meant to me and was equally as distraught in January when Farquhar died. I have loved every moment of my life as a piggy slave and wish I had entered into the wonderful world of guinea pigs sooner..

My first own piggy was a gorgeous tricoloured coronet/peruvian. He was red, but had a white face and a big black patch of his right eye - similar to Nerys' face markings, actually! He was a Christmas present from my parents as we had just lost the family piggy after nearly ten years.

My sister held the other piggy in her arms, and we looked at each other, because we each liked the other piggy better, but didn't dare saying so at first! My sister's sow Stupsi (Nudgy) was a red dutch longhair, with a bit more white than Taffy.

We had babies twice, before my Strolch (Scoundrel) got the snip - it was back in the eighties, mind you! Strolch was such a bawler. I remember when we had to separate him from highly pregnant Stupsi for the first time, and I sat holding all evening, singing Christmas songs to him (at Easter!) to calm him down. mallethead

Strolch died age six, still going strong, together with his second wife Boehnchen (Beanie) when the neighbours dog managed to break through the fence into our garden and the covered, solid run. I was at uni by that time but had a BIG cry! 8...

Sorry, I have only soem faded pics in an old album somewhere.

He didn't like how noisy he was - that's the excuse he gave.
I yelled at him a lot and then ignored him for a week. I'm such grateful Mal went to such a good home :)

What was your first ever pet you adopted on ChickenSmoothie? Ive forgotten mine, but reminded my sister, RoseStar, to leep her first ever pet special. Sorren Fey, you should be honoured that my sisters first ever pet was one of your adoptables Please share them with us

my first two piggy were self black shorthaired and near impossible to tell apart and they were 7ish when were got them, their old owner decided that they did not want to breed piggies or have any anymore so the younger ones went to Woodgreen animal shelter but they said they would just put the old ones down and hence my mum can home with Gulliver and Sullivan we had them till they were nine

at the time i was a bit confused because i already had six rabbits and dad had already said no more but my mum is a sucker for a sob story!

My first pig was Charlie. He's no longer here, he died of a kidney tumour at the age of 4 in March last year.
Put simply, Charlie saved me from myself. He stopped me getting lost in my own mind and introduced me to the world of guinea pigs. As hard as the last six years have been, especially the first year and this past year, my pigs have stopped me going too far down.

I got Charlie as a therapy pet in July 2003, and my second pig Tuppy in August 2004. I discovered rescue, forums, C&C cages and everything else in early 2005. My piggies revived me, and in a way I felt I owed it to the species to do as good as I could for my own piggies - which is why I spoil them so! My guinea pigs gave me a direction in life; their welfare is my purpose.

I will have to find a picture of the pig who started it all off! Sorry it's a bit deep. :))

My first piggy was (still is) Gerty - in my avatar. I got her from a friend at work who decided to breed them :<> At the time I didn't know any better & kept her in a cage that was far too small & didn't feed her enough veg. Gerty came to us already pregnant (which we weren't aware of) and it was only when she had her babies that I found this forum - thanks to Louise at Little Brambles who I phoned for advice :)
I have learned so much since then & even pursuaded to my friend at work to stop breeding :)

My first piggie I named Patch (imaginative eh?) but my Dad always said 'Hello Piggle' when he saw him so in about a week he became Piggle. My sisters rabbit became Bunnle by the same process!

No pictures because it was back in the dim and distant past - probably about 1979-80 :o

There are some but they're all in my mum's old photo albums, I've never scanned any in.

Wow I feel old now.

I had my first piggie when i was 6/7.

Here is a piccy! Me on the left with my first piggie, Daisy, a smooth hair jet black. Gorgeous. And on the right, my brother aged 4 with his piggie Rosie, smooth haired rosette.

Unfortunately they only lasted a couple of years, as we kept them in the shed at the bottom of the garden and it was harder to detect illness/changes in behaviour. My mum thinks they got worms which were never treated and so sadly they died quite young.

they were absolutely lovely piggies though, especially Daisy. She wasnt nervous about being handled and waited for you to come and pick her up. Rosie was always a nervous wreck, diving for the boxes whenever you even opened the shed door!

Any piggie we've had after this have lived long, happy and healthy years inside the house, in the boiler room next to the kitchen where they're always centre of attention and can hear their veggies being prepared every day! I prefer to have them in the kitchen because it gives me peace of mind- i can see them all the time and i can then detect any health problems or changes in behaviour sooner. Much much much better.

These are our 'first' Guinea Pigs that me and the OH got together. I had many others as I was growing up as pets. We got them from the local pet shop a couple of years ago.

uhm..I can't really remember the colour of my very first piggy, I was about 6 or 7 then, and I am now 23 so long time back but I know it was named Piggy.

Our first guinea pig was Acorn, she was a rescue. She was kept with a male rabbit, and because she was so scared and they couldn't catch her, they cleaned the cage out with boiling water, with her in it one day. My sister found this out and persuaded (bullied) them to into rehoming her, so she came to us. She had a badly scalded tummy and a couple of her nails never grew. We didn't know about rescues around here then, there are very few, so we bought Pip. They settled in well together, Acorn was a self coloured mahogany colour and Pip was a ginger dutch. We then bought Jumble, who was a black abyssinian, then in the same week we were asked to take in a guinea pig who alledgedly had been dropped and suffered from brain damage. She did have a very slight head tilt and was not quite normal, she was less nervous than any other guinea we have had. She was a slighty long haired tricolour, called Motley. Sadly Acorn died suddenly on Christmas day a few years ago, Jumble died a few days after an op for ovarian cysts, Motley survived an op for ovarian cysts and was found dead a year later in her run. Pip also had an op for ovarian cysts, she never woke up, but it was discovered she also had a necrotic kidney so that was possibly why she never survived.

OK well my kids had been pestering me and OH, well mainly OH for YEARS........WE WANT A PET..........i so would've loved a dog or whatever cause i grew up as a small child with chooks, cats, dogs........ and fell in love with them
One night in 2002 i was not well and lying in bed and a TV program came on and the vet doctor on it was talking about piggies......i yelled to the kids to come and look and said PIGGIES WOULD BE GREAT.....so being novices and stupidly having no knowledge mallethead went to a reputable pet store....(they're not too bad) and bought Sully and Duke x)x)
And from their my love has just increased even more..........if i had my way there would be more than my girls living here!

I think most know my first piggy was Boris,He has now gone to rainbow bridge.
We got him from a petstore(before knowing better) and my OH thought Boris wanted to run on top of the petshop cage which was rather high,Boris fell off the edge which resluted in a broken back,
he had a splint fitted and all was going well and we though he would walk again, due to the splint he developed a fungal infection, then it went internal and he also got bumblefoot(due to inactivity) which spread and caused blood posioning,he was also having fits repeatedly due to the fungal infection so i had no choice but to put him to sleep.
We had him for 3 months and he was terribly sick the whole time,it didnt help that i had a vet who knew basics and no specialised piggy care, his biggest helprs were his aunty Laura,Glynis and Wiebke among many others, this forum means so much to me for that reason as i would never have met half of you otherwise.
I feel horrible about what he went through to this day but what i do feel that is good is that i loved Boris as much as i could ever love another being,he was everything to me and i miss him like crazy.
At least now i know better with piggies!
x

here is my main man Boris!

Bonnie, the big hugs are for you... I just could help welling up at the thought of sweet little Boris and his unfortunate ordeal. I didn't realise his accident had happened at the pet store... Poor little guy. I'm sure my boys are taking care of him at the Bridge.
