Thank you soooo much for all this info! I really needed it. As of right now, she is still eating and drinking water. I have the humidifier running right next to their cage, so hopefully that helps a bit. My other piggie got it as well, as i didn't seperate them soon enough, my mistake. I'll...
@sopheeandrose27 It can take a while for a URI to clear up. Sometimes weeks.
If you don't think she is improving then please take her back to the vet.
They could change the antibiotic, or add in a diuretic to help with the fluid.
She seems to have lost appetite. I'll give her some critical care in 10 minutes. I'm really scared she's gonna have more trouble breathing. What should i do if this happens?
Hi!
Please start syringe feeding her carefully to make sure that the guts keep going.
Be cause the need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat, loss of appetite (and therefore lethargy) is a common symptom of URI and pneumonia.
Please follow the detailed...
Hey! Was there a noticeable difference in symptoms between the piggy with URI and the piggy with fluid on lungs?
My girl has laboured, audible breathing. No snotty nose or raspiness. But she does the thing when she's sitting and her sides move in and out and her head Bob's up and down. We have...
Hi friends,
She is recovered pretty well. She is eating well and drinking. She is back to herself. Walked to my lap this morning for cuddle. She is also gained back her lost 25 GMs and increase 15 more GMs. She is now 530 GMs. Happy she is sounding good. I am still giving her the antibiotics...
I wonder if it is more like an allergy then @WayneAndGarth or possibly a breathing issue which is causing a fluid build up?
Does he seem to be worse at certain times, or does anything trigger it?
The pig in my avatar picture had a few URI's when I first got him. This caused damage to his...
I'm sorry for your loss and that the 2 girls are poorly. I don't know that much about E-Cuniculli. Has Hubert been near a rabbit at all? The treatment she is on is line with what I would expect, especially the Panacur. Poor Pia, it does sound like the stress of the move has brought on a URI or...
The vet listened to Maggie's chest and said it sounded clear so no diuretic given.
She's still acting perfectly normally, although as she's 7 next week, she has slowed down a bit in recent months and lost some weight, despite having a ferocious appetite. Her weight has plateaued now though. I'm...
I agree with Helen above, maybe mention some Furosomdie (diuretic) to the vet if there is any fluid on the lungs, they should be able to hear this with stethoscope , it did help Cookie once with a stubborn URI. Sending love x
Hi! This is my first post here ever and I am at my wits end. I live in Finland and I have a 2 year old boar name Veeti. Veeti has had health problems since last October. It all started when he was showing some URI symptoms, temperature (40,1 celcius degrees) and sneezing and some wheezing noises...
I was thinking it was an allergy because it does get better and then his runny nose will come back but I can't pin point what it is. I've locked my cat out of my room and I'm trying to keep everything as clean as possible. Their cage is on a rug that I don't vacuum that often because I'm afraid...
Thanks :) For the mo, the sulfatrim is for the URI , if that is what the noisy breathing is caused by; if it doesn't work, diuretics are probably the next thing to try. I'm going to ask the vet about the needle procedure tomorrow, but I presume it will need to wait til he's completed the...
So sorry to hear this, it sounds like a very stubborn URI. Would the vet consider giving him a diuretic such as Furosemide this will help clear any fluid from lungs. Possibly Bisolvon is also something to talk to the vet about, info on a thread here Bisolvon Powder

Hi!
I m very sorry.
Would your vet try a diuretic if there is fluid in the lungs/chest? Since piggies cannot breathe through the mouth, you can hear every little obstruction somehwere in the airways; it can come in a wide range of noises which often sound much more dramatic than they...
Pneumonia is common in guinea pigs with a repiratory infection and as mentioned above a diuretic like furosemide is essential. Bactrim is not always the most effect antibiotic for URIs. It may be worth asking your vet about Septrin or Zithromax.
Anyone ever used Dioralyte for their piggies? Vimt's is on a diuretic fro a URI and struggling to get her to drink with it.... Concerned about her getting dehrydrated
That Metacam dosing is in line with what my vet suggests except that I split it so that they get 0.2ml twice a day. This does takes into account the metabolism of the pig. Just let your vet know you have given it.
Other antibiotics the vet could consider are Zithromax or Doxycycline. If it is a...
Good luck at the vets on Friday, I would definitely go for a second opinion too. :tu:
See what your options are, think about Dilly's quality of life, her chances of recovery, managing her general health & yes unfortunately your finances will have a bearing on your decision.
A Few things I...
Hi and welcome
I am very sorry for your loss!
If it is a normal bacterial infection, then most healthy piggies with a fully functional immune system can fend it off. It is mainly the very young and stressed out shop piggies in close proximity and the old and frail that are most at risk...
