Please Help My New Pregnant Guinea Pig Has Crackly Breathing

I am so sorry they were stillborn, am tagging @Wiebke to help on that. Has your girl seen a vet recently? now that she has given birth it would be good for her to go onto antibiotics and possibly diuretics too to treat the URI.

Poor Minion Has A Respiratory Problem :-(

Fingers firmly crossed! Is your vet thinking of a respiratory tract infection (URI) or a urinary tract infection (UTI)? It is unfortunately not quite clear to me. If he is breathing heavily from the diaphragm, there could be a build up of fluid in the lungs or the chest cavity, In this case a...

Amy Is Breathing Funny And Generally Not Herself

Sounds to me like a URI as it has come on so quickly or even pneumonia. Diuretics are very important in this situation, is there another vet you can see today?

    Severe Fluid Retention

Diuretic can really work wonders. It does sound possibly heart related to me. Dental issues are a common problem as they choose to breathe rather than eat. URIs are common too, especially recurring ones. Have you ever noticed him hooting? Often followed by a cough? Is he difficult to rouse...

    Uri/antibiotics Help Please

Please call the vets, explain that you have the Septrin and ask if you should use it. If it is a URI it needs to be dealt with quickly. Ideally he should see the vet as they will also need to check for fluid on his chest and give a diuretic if so. He may also need Bisolvon if he has any mucous...

    Is Allie Depressed Or Sick?

Please see a vet promptly; she sounds like she has got a respiratory infection, which can kill if left untreated. Crusty eyes and a puffed up coat are surefire signs that she is ill. The sooner the better, as guinea pigs with a URI can downhill quite quickly! Weigh her daily at the same time...

    Uri - Isolate Sick Pig?

I am very sorry! The need to breathe comes before the need to drink and thirdly before the need to eat. Baytril is additionally an appetite dampener. Please syringe feed in little, but often if at all possible. Make sure that you never give more than 1/3 to 1/2 of a 1ml syringe at a time, so...

    Respitory Infection - Reassurance Please?

If the vet has said he has fluid on his chest, you must get diuretics from the vet to clear it, this is very important & could save his life. Make a note of everything Helen has said & contact your vet again to ask for the diuretics. It is important to replace the fluid as Helen says. Baytril is...

    Uri

I am very sorry! It could be also due to a different bug that is not responsive to baytril or - as he's had baytril regularly - a resistancy. There are still stronger antibiotics like zithromax (azithromycin) that your vet could try. It would be good if your vet also prescribed a diuretic if the...

    Uri - Isolate Sick Pig?

You are doing fine; just keep doing what you are. it is likely to be some time before you see much in the way of poos. URI is upper respiratory tract infection whereas pneumonia is lung infection/congestion. URI can develop into pneumonia, hence why I include any medication you may want to ask...

Baby Piggy Has A Poorly Eye

I think there are 2 things going on, the breathing is likely to be an upper respiratory infection and he will most likely be given antibiotics. However, if the breathing is clicky I suspect he may have fluid on his chest and so would also need diuretics. If on diuretics he should also be given...

    Potential Uri?

I agree both pigs need to see a vet as soon as possible for antibiotics and also diuretics if they also have fluid on their chest. A product like Bisolvon would also be good if they are snotty which I assume vets in the US would stock or an equivalent. URI can kill very quickly if left untreated.

Amy Is Breathing Funny And Generally Not Herself

Are the diuretics vital, or can she wait to see our regular vet Monday? Are there any particular type she should/shouldn't have? I wish I had mentioned diuretics myself at the vets :( I was just so worried about seeing the emergency vet as I don't know how much experience he has. We checked the...

    Wet Piggie

Please see a vet. It is most likely a URI, a urinary tract infection, especially if the pee is rather strong and stale smelling. Mention the drinking lots to the vet; it is a symptom of URI, but could be tied to other issues with the urinary tract, too. In case of a URI ask for some metacam...

    Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

Thanks! I am familiar with doxycycline and know that it often works well for URI, but when I googled ronoxan, it didn't come up with that connection.

    Boar Keeps Urinating

Please have him checked for urinary tract infection (UTI). It often starts with increased, stale smelling peeing. URIs are very typical for this time of the year, when piggies are put outside while the ground is still rather cold and damp and the nights are still close to freezing. You will...

Update On My Girls (its Long!)

It has been a total rollercoaster few weeks, particularly with Fudge. She started with horrendous diarrohea, stomach cramps and gassyness and it was a nightmare to get under control. It was diagnosed as an inflamatory gut issue, and she had to visit the vet daily for subcut fluids and metacam...

    Rattling Breathing

Assuming you are in the UK (please put your location in your profile), there has been massive sudden change in temperature this last week, particularly with night-time temperatures dropping well into single figures. Guinea pigs kept outside (and also inside if the house temperature drops a lot...

My Poor Baby Has Pneumonia :-(

Hi, What antibiotics has she been given and what is the dose? It will be worth talking to the vet about the use of a diuretic in this case to remove the fluid from her lungs called Furosemide Here is a link to it on Guinea Lynx http://www.guinealynx.info/cardiovascular_agents.html#lasix a...

    Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

I think Ronoxan is Doxycycline? my Nigel was on it when he arrived. Great that she has been given diuretic, has she also got tablets for at home? Good idea on the steam therapy, it always helps. I would also ask the vet for Bisolvon which helps clear mucous. If the Doxy does not help it may...
