    The Beastie Boys

Rescues are definitely our first choice. Ideally we would like an older spayed sow or boar. Poor guy has probably had enough of living with the "expressive" ones and is due a bit of calm.

    Dominant Behaviour Post-Spay

Sorry I can't answer your question. I've not had any spayed sows but I hope someone who can help will be along soon.

    Post Ovarian Cyst Spay fighting

Hello All, My piggy Honey had an Ovarian Cyst Spay yesterday (07/11/2025) and so far she is having an incredible recovery, honestly shes acting like nothing happened. Eating non-stop, lots of healthy poos, very happy overall. Apart from the refusal to take her medication, takes a long time to...

    The Toofie Breakers Club

If the Ever Beautiful Betsy 🌈 was still around she would be a member of this club. I'm not really sure what happened but she went in for an emergency spay during Lockdown and when she came home on of her front teeth was only half a tooth! The vet didn't own up to anything so it will always be...

    Guinea Pig Spaying

...She has two cysts growing on her ovaries that are not large, but definitely still a concern. I was given an estimate of $3600 to do the spaying with the (granted, very good) surgeon at the vet I took her to for her ultrasound. Now, I've already had one boar pass after neutering from another...

    Bereaved Sow

Oscar with my rather confused spayed Hafren, after he failed to show the least interest in her! From your single guide . Made me laugh out loud . Even looks like my Maria.

    Spaying 6 year old piggie

We had a 2.5 year old spayed 9 days ago. She struggled, it is such a big surgery. We were back at the vets twice last week and it was 5 days before she was being her scampy self. It's not a direct comparison for you but it really felt touch-and-go for a couple of days, and Cheryl is a big pig...

Guinea pig not eating post spay

Hi, I guess I'm looking for reassurance rather than advice per se. My 3 year old sow was spayed yesterday after developing ovarian cysts. The operation went well, but she is still reluctant to eat. I'm giving critical care every 3 hours, and she's been back to the vet for a check up, but I'm...

Treating bloat and poo stuck post surgery

Hi everyone I just wanted to see if any of you do anything else to what I am already doing, to aid a guinea pig who has bloat (he’s eating normally though) but is producing normal droppings…and his housemate who was just spayed and, the vet thinks, has dry poo stuck in her intestine. The one...

    Post ovariohysterectomy

I have had sows spayed due to ovarian cysts but I can’t remember exactly how long it took for full recovery. It can take a while for anaesthetic to clear the system. Mine did make good recoveries. Your girl is clearly in excellent hands but it is natural to worry. She’s eating and pooping and...

    Mammary mass in females

Hey, one of my girls has a mammary mass. We've decided to neuter first and then wait and see if it shrinks or do second surgery to remove them. Anyone has experience with these surgeries? Trying to prepare, we lost one of our boys suddenly last month and panicking thinking about her not making...

    Spay or not?

...so I started up the novacam again after 3 days. I spoke to my vet this week, and she suggested a spay as the way forward. However, flank spaying is not common around here so she will make some calls next week to see where we can go for a flank spay. However, now it’s the weekend I am...

    Spay costs in Devon

Does anyone have experience of the cost of spaying a young sow in Devon? I know different vets and different areas have very different prices. I'm looking to get two young girl piggies for my bereaved boy Jester and I wanted to get them spayed as a preventative measure (my boy is already...

    Mammary mass in females

...able to stand properly. I’m not sure I have ever heard of an existing mammary mass reducing due to the piggy being spayed - particularly as spaying is usually a bigger surgery than removing the mammary mass would be (it’s an easy surgery if done while the mass is small) Sows: Behaviour and...

Best new friend/s for recent singleton

He would not need to be neutered if sows were spayed but the chances of you finding spayed sows in a rescue are very low so not something you should hang your hopes on. You would do better to get him neutered asap and start the six week wait process if you are set on sows rather than a boar...

    Do I spay my piggies?

I wouldn't spay my girls prophylacticly. Many female guinea pigs develop cysts but most of them don't cause trouble. In Austria, it's also still a high risk operation that's only performed for medical reasons. But I know that some vets in the UK and US are in favour of prophylactic spaying.

I’m so glad to hear Cheryl is back to her scampy self 🥰 These piggies do worry us 😬

    Ovarian cysts

Poor piglet! Was the crash during the attempted spay due to the anaesthetic or was it due to her condition ,(or both/something else)? Luna recently had a spay via her flanks which is less invasive, although still requires the same anaesthetic. My vet said recent studies have shown there are no...

Fishy-smelling urine - does it need antibiotics?

That must have been tough for you and Cariad then. Piggies do like to make sure that we keep learning new stuff, don’t they?
