    Dental and thyroid issues

I can't advise you on UK vets as I'm in Canada, hopefully someone can come along and give you some advice there. I did have a pig with hyperthyroidism so maybe I can help out a bit there. One of my past pigs, Tomie, developed hyperthyroidism around age 3. She dropped weight despite having a...

Experience with the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton

I'm glad her teethies are all sorted now. How is she after the GA etc? I hope she will start munching hay merrily as soon as she is up to it - if she hasn't already of course. Fingers crossed the blood tests don't find anything nasty. 🤞🙏

    Dental and thyroid issues

...work. I just want to make sure I’m making the right choices for her:( I was hesitant on the bloods but I’ve been told it’s dangerous to start thyroid meds without blood sampling first. And that the meds can effect the kidneys. Especially as the specialist said she’ll have to stay on metacam...

    Furbabies' Adventures

Tessy had her vet appointment yesterday and there is good news. It's not lymphoma, her thyroid is enlarged. But the blood test didn't show any hormonal changes. So she doesn't need any kind of treatment at the moment. :D Bonny came along but there was only time for a quick checkup (it took ages...

    Not sure what to do…

...upper respiratory noises were definitely abnormal. She also felt a lump under her chin in her neck. She said could be many things including thyroid issues. The lump is likely causing the breathing noises. She said we can either try anti inflammatory medication to see if that reduces it or...

Piggie hasn't eaten in 3 weeks - Poo Soup?

...I know others have been on. I've lost several in the last several years and I don't want to lose her. But you understand. My last one had a thyroid tumor so we had time to say goodbye and the one before intestinal torsion, so it was an emergency. I'm holding out hope for my little Fig. Thank...

    Skeletal and teeth issues

...it's strange how we can miss the medical schedule for those of us who have had medically complex pets. I lost a piggie with a chronic thyroid issue last fall, and one of the hardest things was turning off the alarm on my phone that reminded me of when I had to give her meds each day. It was...

    Losing weight

Would this be checked by doing blood tests, or urine samples? My appointment is at 4pm but I know some vets like to do stuff like that in the morning so if that’s what necessary I might try to reschedule the visit for an earlier time to avoid extra trips.

My guinea pig is loosing fur on nose and feet. It has been treated but nothing helps

If it is eaten from the top, then I would consider looking at barbering. There are no parasites that do that in guinea pigs. Thyroid doesn't come with hair loss. Barbering ( Eating Hair)

    Senior pig -please help

...not show anything obvious but slightly low in some areas and her weight loss is most likely because of teeth, GI diesease, metabolic disease ,thyroid, cancer, renal disease ....I'm guessing a combination of them I could get more bloods and have ultrasounds to rule some of these out. But...

    Not sure what to do…

She’s back at the vets in a week to see if the medication has had any effect and if not we will go with the sedation and sample but I’m really not sure if we should have gone with this straight away

...though). She will come back in about a month to see how things are. Long term they said it’s also helpful for them to keep an eye on her thyroid. She has a serious heart condition but luckily it’s responding quite well to the treatment so far and we also have the wriggle room to up doses...

    Mysterious weight loss

...in thirst. We had her checked multiple times, by multiple different exotics vets, who ran a plethora of tests on her to find that her thyroid function is slightly off. We then tried her on thyroid medication but it literally made no difference. She’s coasted at around 700g since but has...

    Mysterious weight loss

...weight loss is my least favourite symptom because there can be so many different things behind it. :( Anyway, I assume that your vets have already checked for the main suspects when it comes to the combo of increased drinking and weight loss - kidneys and diabetes, apart from hyper-thyroid.

Pig eats well but keeps losing weight

...for today at 2:30, so I'll keep you posted with how it goes. Definitely asking for a blood workup checking sugars, kidney values, and thyroid hormones, and hoping it gives us an answer we can manage for her! Right now she is happily eating a carrot, poor girl has no idea her day is going to...

The last pig I lost went really suddenly... she had a long-term thyroid problem on meds, had a respiratory infection but was on antibiotics for about a week when she died and seemed to be doing much better, was seen...

Tomie is now started on methimazole for hyperthyroid!

My Pili Pala developed suspected hyperthyroidism in her last year of life - very edgy, fidgety and impatient behaviour combined with slow weight loss. However as she was already on a cocktail of long term gut meds of painkillers for a thickened lower bowel causing IBS-like symptoms and needed...
