About a year ago, our Florrie dropped from around 1100g to around 700g, and we noticed a massive increase in thirst.

We had her checked multiple times, by multiple different exotics vets, who ran a plethora of tests on her to find that her thyroid function is slightly off. We then tried her on thyroid medication but it literally made no difference. She’s coasted at around 700g since but has shown no signs of pain, no changes in her appetite and still bright as ever. None of the vets we went to have any ideas on what it could be, as they’ve ruled pretty much everything out.

She’s now lost a further 150g in a month - sitting at 550g. She’s still bright as ever, at the front of the cage wheeking for her food, and we have an appointment booked for her with an exotics vet.

But I was just wondering if any of you have experienced anything like this with your piggies and what it could be? Is there any testing we may have missed or possible diagnoses I could discuss with the vets to consider? I’m just at a loss. Like I said, all bloods were normal other than borderline thyroid levels, no tumours etc, and her only symptoms were an increase in thirst and weight loss.

Hi

HUGS

I am very sorry. Mystery weight loss is my least favourite symptom because there can be so many different things behind it. :(

Anyway, I assume that your vets have already checked for the main suspects when it comes to the combo of increased drinking and weight loss - kidneys and diabetes, apart from hyper-thyroid.
